View Full Version : Fewer Americans like to drive, survey shows PCK 08-01-2006, 02:25 PM Interesting read http://pewresearch.org/social/pack.php?PackID=16 Pravus Prime 08-01-2006, 02:50 PM It is. I'd like to see a study of a conventional car owners vs a hybrid owners in the same criteria, as a comparison. Moreover, most people see driving as a chance to take care of many of the other routines and amusements of daily living. Here is a (slightly scary) list of things people report having done in the past year while they were behind the wheel: More like actually willing to admit. More than two-thirds (68%) of drivers say they have sung aloud while driving. Guilty, I think. I lip sync occasionally. Yay! Roughly six-in-ten (58%) have talked on a handheld phone while driving. Guilty. Though, it's only to recieve urgent calls. I don't call or just talk while driving. More than four-in-ten (41%) have eaten a meal while driving. Sadly, guilty. I was starving, and I stopped and had a hamburger and a pop from McDonalds. One-in-six (16%) have combed their hair or applied makeup while driving. Never. Some 6% have read a paper, book or magazine while driving. Never. Some 6% have fallen asleep while driving. Never. And 38% have cursed at another driver. Only because I don't have a lightning gun to zap them. Chuck 08-01-2006, 03:48 PM I think the 38% that have cursed other drivers is too low. Fortunately, I have done it less.... http://www.spencerthelion.com/images/fullofit01.jpg ...why bother muttering a choice name when you can pop out a camera and show the world what they are? :p :D TonyPSchaefer 08-01-2006, 05:05 PM Does flipping off a Hummer and taking a picture to submit at FUH2.com count? Hot Georgia 08-01-2006, 09:24 PM I just LOVE driving my HCH. It doesn't matter if it's only going 30MPH on a lonely country road in 70% humidity and 105 degree cabin temps. I get to drive both ways in my commute and is one of the highlights of my day which I always look forward to. Traffic- sure I enjoy no traffic but don't mind it too much either, as long as it is not agressive which I don't see very often. My main MPG favorite road will soon be clogged again by over developed neighborhoods and 3 schools with busses which is kinda a bummer. But that's another challenge with my HCH. Deal with it or find another way. Investigation=half the fun! -Steve Chuck 08-01-2006, 10:16 PM Does flipping off a Hummer and taking a picture to submit at FUH2.com count? I suppose. :D Contrary to a small and very vocal small group at GH thinks, I don't give Hummers and the one-ton pickups the birdie. brick 08-02-2006, 06:27 AM It just occurred to me that I do like to drive. See, when I was a teenager I absolutely loved it. Any time, any place, driving was a whole lot of fun. Then things sort of went down hill, and I was at the point where commuting was a chore. The problem that I have is the number of self-righteous idiots who feel that it is their God-given right to get there before anyone else on the road, and will make everyone else as miserable as they feel like. There are many people who share the road happily, but the @$$&(@($ make the whole thing suck sometimes. Focussing on fuel economy turns that around to some degree, because at least I have something to think about other than the guy who cut me off or is currently riding my bumper because he can. If I weren't in that mode of operation, it's likely that I would still be dealing with the exact same idiots, just a little bit farther down the road or in a different kind of conflict. So, screw 'em. Some day I'll be able to block them out completely, or they will run out of gas money. Or I'll live in a city and won't need a car...either way I win. vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
