I'm considering getting a set of 14" HX wheels and Insight OEM RE92's for use on my 05 Civic VP Coupe, but I have a few questions.

specs on my car (from hondanews.com/archive section):

2005 Civic Coupe w/auto trans, weight = 2513 lbs
OEM tires 185/70SR14 Dunlops
- max load 1201 lbs
- max PSI 51 psi
- tire weight 16 lbs

2005 Insight w/CVT, weight = 1975 lbs
OEM tires 165/65SR14 RE92's
- max load 937 lbs
- max PSI 44 psi
- tire weight 13 lbs

**ALT tire size from tire rack 175/65SR14
- max load 1102 lbs
- max PSI 50 psi
- tire weight 16 lbs

Now for the questions...

1) are the Insight owners (and/or those using OEM insight RE92's) only running 44PSI?

2) should I worry about the lower max load rating for the OEM RE92 over my OEM tire? (assuming vehicle weight 2800 lbs [full fluids and me in the car], and assuming 60/40 front/rear weight distribution, that breaks out to 860 lb load per front tire and 560 lb load per rear tire)

thoughts / comments?

Hi Tom:
1) are the Insight owners (and/or those using OEM insight RE92's) only running 44PSI?___Not a chance. MAX sidewall is where most Insighter's looking for FE begin. I ran mine at 55 + for her last 5,000 miles..

2) should I worry about the lower max load rating for the OEM RE92 over my OEM tire? (assuming vehicle weight 2800 lbs [full fluids and me in the car], and assuming 60/40 front/rear weight distribution, that breaks out to 860 lb load per front tire and 560 lb load per rear tire)

thoughts / comments?___I would not worry about the load but you will have shorter tire life then an Insight specific RE92 at MAX sidewall or above due to the extra weight.

___You really have to be careful here. The Insight size - specific RE92 is not the same as any of the other RE92’s in terms of weight, longevity, and most importantly Rolling Resistance. I would consider a B381, SP20 FE, or an MXV4 Plus before I would touch a non-Insight specific RE92. If you use the Insight’s RE92 however, nothing but goodness can come of it other then you are pushing a lot more weight vs. an Insight of course …

___Good Luck

thanks for the feedback Wayne - I hadn't thought of extra weight causing increased wear!

linderwear since you have the same car as me, do you have those dunlops? because those are LRR tires too! So they aren't much of an improvement over RE92's.

Phil,

Yes - I'm running the OEM Dunlop SP20 FE's. If I can find a set of used 14" alloys, it'll defintely be cheaper to swap my OEM tires rather than buy new.

I run 60#'s in my 92's all the way around.

I'm at 62 psi now, down from 70. I backed off due to an unacceptable ride and no apparent FE difference. The ride is fine at 62, 2100 lbs.

I have found 55 psig to be the best bang for MPG.

I tried 75 psig on my last tank, with no other changes, and the MPG's or coast distance didn't improve any. So I went back to 55 psig.

I do notice the RE-92's on the front wear on the outside first, I reckon that's from the high speed turns. All to save momentum...
