As I understand it, DFCO only occurs in an AT when the Torque Converter is locked correct? After a recent ECU reset and mostly highway driving, for the first time ever I have seen my TC stay locked while decelerating from about 50 mph, meaning as soon as I let go of the throttle, the RPMs do not drop. After some more city driving the ECU has learned to not stay locked for some reason (maybe due to slowing and accelerating). So now it doesn't seem like the TC stays locked after I release the throttle, and the RPMs drop immediately.

If I downshift to 3 from D in this situation, will that lock up the TC/enable DFCO? Is this what I should do then when i get off the freeway to a red light, or when approaching a stop sign?

Can't speak for any other model, I believe my 99 Honda CR-V will DFCO in any of the 4 AT gears. Don't have a scanguage but we observed this: when we took it to the mountains of Colorado in 2004, used the transmission lots to help slow when coming downhill, and we got the best mpg we have ever seen (30-31 for a 5 day trip, 250 miles per day). In Iowa we have fewer opportunities to coast in gear and we average 24-25 mpg overall.

I put my SG in my Mazda Tribute to check if it would go into DFCO. I was hopefully it would as it has a lockup-TC.

The Tribute will not do DFCO.

i warmed up the car, hit the road with my kid watching the SG. I was able to keep the TC locked up when decelerating. never saw open loop.
I was bummed.

I will downshift to make a DFCO coast last closer to the end of the stop.
