WOW that was tricky to say the least.
You have to start a thread than and only than can you make a poll
visionseeming 09-15-2008, 09:37 AM No more than under 50 for me, but this is regardless of the PSL - be it 65/70/55, 50 would be my lower limit, just out of courtesy.
Damionk 09-15-2008, 09:43 AM I usually try to stay above 50 MPH. There are times on my commute where using DWL will cause me to go under that. If there are no cars behind me I will let myself drop to 45 or under. If I am in traffic I will not go below 50 no matter what. (Unless traffic is under that already of course.)
Ophbalance 09-15-2008, 10:15 AM I'll gladly go 45 and under when following big yellow buses up on the highway ;). State law limits them to 45. And they're a bit hard to miss, meaning I don't get people flying up my tail when doing this. Otherwise, it's 10 under in a 55/65 and 15 under in a 70.
locutus 09-15-2008, 10:43 AM On most interstates I'll try to average 55 and generally not dip below 50. That's PSL minus 10-15 around here.
In Michigan, at least on I-75 the minimum is 55 for cars, used to be 45 until 1997. Maximum for cars is 70, for trucks 60. I usually shoot for 55 to 60mph.

Bucko 09-15-2008, 10:50 AM On the interstates, about 10 below is the most I'm willing to slow down, unless I can get behind a slower moving vehicle like a Semi or Bus. You end up with fewer people flying up your butt, cuz they are going around the truck anyway.
BudgetFitting 09-15-2008, 10:53 AM 25 mph below the posted speed limit on the freeway at the lowest speed on my glide. Fastest I ever go is 52 mph which is still 13 mph below the 65 mph posted limit.
PaleMelanesian 09-15-2008, 11:09 AM With a 70 mph limit on the interstate, I'll go as low as 40 (state minimum) when it's clear. With traffic, I'll keep to 55 minimum, pulsing up higher as clusters of cars come up.
I try to avoid the interstate. My most common route has a state highway that parallels it. It's 2+2 lanes, goes through towns, and is nearly empty. I can go 25 mph there if I want. ;)
------
The Odyssey has better highway gears, so I go a bit faster in it. 10 under.
Didn't vote since it varies depending on which car and what the posted speed limit.
The 5 speed wagon I drive as close to 53 - 55 mph as I can safely.
Car is geared for best fuel mileage at 55 mph. 1950 rpms at 55 mph with a 2.3L Turbo I4.
My highway car gets it's best mileage between 62-65 mph.
The transmission does not like to run under 62 mph on the highway. The L-Torque converter kicks in and out under the slightest load. If I lived in a flat area then I would probably drop the speed down 5 to 10 mph.
I tested my gas mileage on a trip to Fl. at the end of July. Speed Limit / my speed. 70/62, 65/60, 60/55, 55/55. I got .5 mpg better than just doing the speed limit and limiting my speed to 65 mph maximum.
Fuel mileage in both cars goes south very quickly over 65 mph.
kingcommute 09-15-2008, 11:55 AM On my morning commute (when I'm in no hurry to get to work) I pulse to 60mph and glide to 40mph unless traffic picks up. In the evening on the way home I usually pulse to 75mph and glide to 60 (because I want to be home) a 72 mile one way trip is a long ride, and I want to see my family.
basjoos 09-15-2008, 12:01 PM I'll run at the PSL on the flats, drop up to 5mph below PSL on the uphills when there is traffic and as low as the minimum speed limit on the uphills when there is no traffic (usually at night), up to 10 over the PSL or whatever the rest of the traffic is doing when coasting on the downhills.
Thumper 09-15-2008, 12:05 PM Here I can drop to 55 on interstate withan psl of 70. When traffic permits, I will drop to 40-45 while dwl. My final 13 miles home on on a state highway with psl of 65. I run 50-53 on that one with little problems with traffic backing up.
Pierce 09-15-2008, 03:41 PM In New Jersey, all highways have a minimum speed limit of 40 mph, as mandated by the state dept. transportation. This minimum limit is not posted, however. The psl in most areas on highways is 50~55 mph. However, I'll drive 40 mph at 1500 rpm (max.). when going up a hill in a 55 mph zone my car (while running at 1500 rpm) will have it's speed drop to about 30~35 mph easily.
JusBringIt 09-15-2008, 08:23 PM I'll do state minimum or 40, these usually coincide, I might go down to 38/39. I fully understand the meaning of a speed limit and a speed minimum. I use it to my advantage as that is what the law says you should go between. My pulse and glide is 55-40, so whether I'M IN A 55 or 65 zone, I'll still do that pulse and glide. I've had too many cop issues and I still have a speeding ticket (61 in a 35) that I need to get off my record. This was in 2005 and it'll drop off in 2010
jfbrown42 09-15-2008, 09:54 PM I try to average about 60-65mph which is 5-10mph ABOVE the 55mph speed limit we have where I live.
chilimac02 09-15-2008, 10:16 PM Yeah, I'm definitely the slow driver on my commute in to Fort Worth. I've been passed by school buses several times (I thought they had to drive slower than the Psl??).
I usually don't go much over 55mph in my Accord unless it is coasting downhill. In my explorer, I will go over 60 if there is a large hill coming up.
The accord doesn't like to stay in 4th much below 45mph going uphill. So I always stay above that. The explorer needs to stay above 50 to keep it in 5th gear. (Auto's take a little TLC to achieve good F/E).
moneysaver 09-15-2008, 10:25 PM I usually go 55-60 even when the psl is 65. If there is no traffic and no one is behind me then i would drop as low as 50 while doing dwl.
ATaylorRacing 09-15-2008, 11:11 PM I drive 65 in a 70, 60-65 in a 65 or 60, and 55-60 in a 55. My 96 Geo has a best of 55 mpg at 55-60 and at a steady 65 gets over 50.....at 75-80 it drops to @ 42!
I bought it to save $$$ and I might never see what a steady 55 will get me.....to much of a hurry, got better things to do with my time than be stuck out on the road any longer.
lamebums 09-16-2008, 08:55 AM I hold it to 50 in the 65 MPH zones around here, but cars are usually doing 75+.
I'll cut it loose in a Fas downhill to however fast it goes though :) I've had it to 80 a couple times.
On some extreme DWL I'll let it drop to 45, sometimes 40 in the truck lane.
I keep it above 40 at all times though because any lower and I don't have enough torque to get up the hills around here.
99metro 09-16-2008, 10:44 AM I drive 55 max. So that would put me at 20 to 25 under the posted 75 mph speed limit. BUT, I don't drive the interstates. I take that back - just yesterday I traveled 3 miles on the interstate. It was 55 in the construction zone, but when it turned to 75, I maintained 55 and hit my hazards - got off on the next off ramp 1/2 mile down the road and hit the frontage road. First time I had been on the interstate in the Metro in months.
In SC the minimum PSL for the Interstate is 45mph. 45mph is my low on the glide down and 52mph is my high for any max PSL of 55, 60, 65, or 70mph.
Now, on the local highways I will go as low as 30mph on the glide and the max will usually range from 45mph-52mph. The PSL for the local highway range from 45, 55, or 60mph.
I have been trying out 45mph for the pulse and glide down to 30mph lately. Looks to be promising so far. :D
lightfoot 09-16-2008, 12:17 PM I drive 55 max. This is OT, but I once drove a rented Geo Metro on Daytona International Speedway. Sort of. They told me to stay on the apron because it wouldn't go fast enough to stick to the banking. I think I kept the flashers on.
[I was a photog, the race had finished, and I needed to get back to the pits. So the guards were nice and let me drive around the "quick" way. It may have had something to do with the homemade jam I brought them every year (although that usually only resulted in them saying "no" in a more friendly way). They were a lot of fun to be around, as long as you were behaving.]
degnaw 09-16-2008, 08:55 PM I usually maintain 63mph in traffic, down to 55 on uphills (if I had to I'd go as slow as 45 to stay in high gear, which I did in the Alleghenies). The speed limit on most highways I go on is either 55 or 65, but 63mph is still slower than general traffic in the 55. There's only two lanes through that section (downtown Dayton), so I basically try not to hold people up as much.
Showbizk 09-18-2008, 09:59 AM It never fails to amaze me how driving 5-7 below the speed limit (60mph) in morning and afternoon rush-hour traffic gets me to work within a half-minute of the driver(s) who've been slicing and dicing, leaping and braking, from one car behind me to 2 or 3 cars ahead of me at the exit of the freeway! And I've gotten 25% better than EPA mileage!!!
Thank you CleanMPG!!!!
