I don't discuss hypermiling much in my personal life. I usually just tell people that I drive slow to get better gas mileage, so I wasn't expecting one of my son's friends (call him Karl) to get in trouble with the high school police liaison for hypermiling.
Karl is a good kid (likely valedictorian, Ivy-league bound) who has problems because his parents are too wealthy. Namely they buy him cars and pay for his gas--which wouldn't be a problem if he drove his cars like he owned them. Instead, so far he has made a big contribution to the Big 2.5 by totaling his first two cars, a jeep and a mustang. After his parents bought him his most recent car, a yellow mustang with black racing stripe, my son discussed my hypermiling with him. Apparently it had some effect as Karl is reporting low 40's in his new 'stang.
The problem is that now the local school bus drivers are complaining to the police liaison about Karl holding them up. I guess you know you're a hypermiler if school bus drivers complain about _you_ holding up traffic.
