Audi’s upcoming 3.0L TDI equipped Q5, Q7, A4 and even a 2.0L TDI equipped Audi A3 in their first US endurance test. (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=145248)

New 3.0L TDI equipped Q5 up front followed by the 2.0L TDI equipped A3, 3.0L TDI equipped A4 and Q7 ready to drive the US in a show of turbo-diesel prowess.

The TDI is the world’s most successful diesel engine technology. Now the latest Audi TDI is making its way to the US: Audi is introducing the world’s cleanest diesel to the streets of America inside the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI with its own branded “ultra low emission system”. Once there, and prior to its market launch, it will be put through an endurance test of notoriety, that being the Audi Mileage Marathon.

The Audi Mileage Marathon covers more than 4,800 miles from New York to Los Angeles through major cities and passing countless US points of interest. From October 5-20, 184 drivers from all over the world will do more than just get to know a lot of fascinating roads during a total of 13 daily stages – they’ll also experience the extraordinary efficiency of the TDI models from Audi.

The big real-world driving tour will be driven with 23 cars from four different model lines. Along with the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI, the Audi Q5 3.0 TDI will make its US debut on the roads of America. The Audi A4 will also make its appearance with the 50-state emissions compliant 3.0 TDI engine.

The Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI will add yet another highlight to the Mileage Marathon’s efficiency statistics.

Efficiency over the long haul

The route of the Audi Mileage Marathon runs across the American continent from New York to Los Angeles, passing through the major cities of Chicago, Dallas and Las Vegas during the 13 daily stages, as well as natural wonders including the Rocky Mountains, Death Valley and the Grand Canyon. The entire route includes a mix of city driving and rural driving on highways and country roads. In this environment, the TDI will be able to clearly demonstrate its fuel economy superiority over every other engine technology available to us today.

Ultra low emission system

In the Audi Mileage Marathon, the TDI with its “Ultra low emission system” will be making its debut in a tough endurance test several months before the planned market launch in the US and in Europe in 2009. This exhaust emission control system reduces nitrogen oxides by up to 90 percent, making it compliant with California’s LEV II BIN 5 – the world’s most stringent emission standard. It also already exceeds the requirements of the Euro 6 standards that are targeted for 2014.

Reducing worldwide fuel consumption

With the upcoming 3.0L TDI featuring a 50-state compliant package, the Q7, Q5, A4 and A3’s equipped with the 3.0 and 2.0L TDI’s can be purchased in all 50-states including California and nine others that have followed the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) LEV-II emissions program. Compared with a fleet average of gasoline engines typically found in the US, the TDI achieves a fuel-efficiency advantage of up to 40 percent. Today’s Audi diesel technology can make a greater contribution to world wide fuel consumption than any other type of engine.

I suppose the A3 tdi is why we don't seem to be getting a Rabbit tdi anytime soon...

OK, I will ask the questions pertinent to High gas mileage.

1. What kind of gas mileage does it achieve? 40% better gas mileage than the U.S gasoline engine "fleet" tells me nothing.

2. Will it be available with a 5 or 6 speed manual transmission? An automatic will not protect your standard of living very well.

3.Is the MT and rear end geared high or low? If it is geared low you will be unable to get the MPG's you will need to save your house from being foreclosed.

4. Will the big .2 1/2, or the oil industry, or both combined, be able to lobby (pay) for some cleaver legislation to minimize the impact of this car on their goals? As you know, their direction and goals have been, for the most part, different from our needs here in America.

We have heard a lot of jaw about high MPG vehicles coming our way, but for the most part it is just that. All show and no go.

Wayne, you said that 184 drivers from around the world will be taking part. Are you among them?

I suppose the A3 tdi is why we don't seem to be getting a Rabbit tdi anytime soon...
I hope that's not the reason, after all we already get both a GTI 5-door and an A3 2.0T 5-door. I would much rather have a Rabbit TDI than a Jetta TDI. A hatch is just so much more useful.

Hi Mike:

___Unfortunately, not :( I did request it as soon as Jud saw the vehicles in San Francisco last month but they never replied to my request. MB, BMW and Audi do these kind of things and fly journalists from all over the world to drive for a day or two and than send them on their way back home. Imagine the expense involved and yet they do this all the time…

___Good Luck

Hi Maxx, just an update with something I saw today. The Golf VI is apparently coming to North America in about a year and there are plans to sell it with the TDI.
