Even using mild hypermiling techniques the front brake pads should last a lot longer.
I was wondering if anyone has hypermiled long enough to to see a increae in pad life.

I have always hated using my brakes, as the brake pedal is one of the "money pedals." :p

My Tundra has 113,000 miles and no brake job needed yet. Never really hypermiled it though, except for the month or so after discovering this site, before I bought the Rolla. So, sorry; this doesn't really answer your question.

Maybe this'll help: Based on how much more massive the Tundra is than the Rolla, and the fact that the Tundra has auto tranny, while the Rolla is MT-5, I predict that the Rolla may never need a brake job. At least for as long as I own it, which should be well over 100,000. Unless they've designed the pads/shoes to be much thinner on the Rolla.

I replaced my front pads after two and a half years driving or 90,000km. They were on it when i got it and can't remember if they were new or not but i'd say they were fairly fresh.
While replacing them i noticed one of the pads seized into its slot. A result of gentle braking no doubt!

Saw pics of a Prius II with over 100,000 miles in which brake wear could only be detected with calipers. Of course, that reflects regenerative braking, more so than hypermiling.

I expect DWB to essentially eliminate brake costs in all my vehicles.

My Elantra still has the original pads at 98K.

Wayne's pads probably still have fuzz on them from not being worn in yet. :D ;)

Maybe even a few cobwebs.

Hey Wayne, did you notice a spider coming out of calipers of your brakes from the accord yet? ;):D

I've been getting 150,000 miles from my front pads and 330,000 miles from my rear pads.

I bought a new nissan pickup in 1983,5 speed mt.Bought shoes and pads for it and everytime i looked at the brakes the new pads went back on the shelf in the garage.sold it at 169000 miles because it wasn't enough truck to pull the boat i bought.Wife drove that truck more than i did,and she would downshift instead of using brakes if given a choice also.

This is just one other huge benefit to smart, slow, defensive driving which speeders and irresponsible drivers just don't seem to get.

The only reason I've replaced brake pads is due to noise. When I first got my car new, they were fine, but due to my driving style and general traffic conditions my pads were worn a good amount at 30k miles. They also started squealing noticably when braking lightly. It got to a point where I couldn't stand it, so I had to replace them. I put some afermarket pads on thinking they would last longer, which they did, but they ended up giving me the nasty black dust all over my wheels. It's been about another 30k miles, and the wear rate has dramatically dropped since I started really hypermiling.

One thing that some what worries me is that the pads might glaze over from all of the light braking. I think at some point I'll pull them out again and rough them up with some 60 grit sandpaper.

My car will need new pads within the next five thousand miles or so. The number of 50-0 stops I have to do in three seconds or less when on a 10% down grade (on my work commute) don't exactly help.

I don't know how old these pads are, though.

I used to live in north east PA (Scranton area) and people brunt through pads and rotors like crazy because of the mountains in the area. I suppose they would have been better off shifting to a higher gear for more engine braking, but they would need some serious transmission cooling.

In my old souped up Civics, I used to burn through a set of pads every 2 years.

Those were fairly aggressive compounds though. ;)

Changed the pads on the Insight when I bought it.

Don't expect to have to change them again. :)
