Sales declines are going from bad to worse for one of America’s greatest icons. (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=142200)

2009 VW Jetta 2.0L TDI Sportwagen with a stick - 30/41 mpg per the 08 EPA.

WOLFSBURG, Germany - Volkswagen announced they have become the world’s top third largest automaker thanks to VW’s sales figures in the first half of 2008. Rival Ford is now ranked fourth.

VW delivered 3.31 million vehicles in the first half of 2008, an increase of 7.2% in the first six months of 2008, moving up to third place in the global vehicle sales while overtaking its rival Ford, which announced vehicle sales of 3.22 million for the same period.

In the US, Ford dwarfs VW’s sales with 1,265,466 cars and trucks vs. 135,966 through July of 2008.

"We are delighted that the Volkswagen Group has made it to the global automobile industry’s top three for the first time. This shows that we are on the right track with our ever-stronger international presence and, above all, our product program. We will systematically push ahead with our growth course even in the present difficult market environment," Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen, said.

Ford will have to move much faster with product launches that make sense as the world changes around them. Their survival will prove to be the most critical ascent in the company’s long and illustrious history. With both a declining and demoralized workforce and little new to offer the public in terms of real world needs matching today’s high energy cost realities, an uphill battle it will be :(

VW sales are up this year by a small amount. That makes VW and Honda the only 2 car companies in the US with higher sales this year.

The VW TDI is sold out until (at least) January. Evidently so many people have put deposits down on this car, that dealer's waiting lists greatly exceed their deliverys.

FSPs sick for 100 or even 180 days on dealer lots - and VW's TDI's are sold before they even arrive

Just imagine if Honda and VW offered their most fuel efficient models in NA. We would have probably bought a FIT or a Polo if the prior was available with a smaller engine than the Yaris and if the latter were even available.

The next car I get will either be an Insight clone, a Phev, or a small diesel. Ford offers none of these in the States. Neither does GM.

Skoda's expansion into developing countries accounts for a lot of VW's growth http://www.pressportal.com.au/news/310/ARTICLE/2659/2008-07-21.html. We don't get to see these cars in the US:(.

I doubt that Ford currently has the cash resources to match their push into new markets.
