The media try to portray hyper-miling as draft-ing, that we're holding everybody up and that we're doing dangerous things. It isn't like that," - Wayne (http://www.nydailynews.com/money/2008/08/27/2008-08-27_hypermiling__a_controversial_way_to_amaz.html)

This time the defense gets a say - Ed

Right after the events of 9/11, Wayne Gerdes (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Wayne+Gerdes) went on his own mission of sorts, deciding to do his part to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil by saving fuel. He coined the term "hypermiling" to describe the quest to exceed (and in many cases, do so by a wide margin) a vehicle's fuel economy rating, and for years, he's been sharing techniques on his CleanMpg.com (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/CleanMpg.com) forum.

Gerdes set a world record in 2006 at the Insight Marathon in Tonkawa, Okla., achieving an amazing average of 164 mpg on a 2000-plus mile round trip. He routinely gets about double the EPA's estimated rating in his Honda Accord (http://www.nydailynews.com/topics/Honda+Accord). "It's my passion," says Gerdes. "If it wasn't my passion, it wouldn't be worth it."

I love that the NY Daily News does a good article. I would not expect the same treament from the Times.

I was interviewed once by a NYT reporter. What I told her did not match with her predetermined conclusion so she ignored my explanation and used statements out of context to support her conclusion.

Just achieved 75.773 MPG with my Saturn on our trip up to Spring Green, Wi., 168 miles one way. How?

1. Planed out the route using mostly lightly traveled rural roads.

2. Coasted a lot. It was very hilly. The hills is what gave me the high MPG figure.

3. Applied all other hypermiling techniques appropriate.

Never drafted - never will.

You can get really spectacular results with the right car (not necessairly a hybrid), a little planning on the route, and driving the optium speed that gets the best MPG from your particular car.

Bob.

I had a reporter from a paper in NW Arkansas try to contact me about hypermiling. Personally, I don't talk to reporters. It's not that I don't appreciate what good journalists do, it's that I know what the bad journalists can do. Ironically, the reporter found me through this very site.
