I recently purchased a 2006 HCH w/ NAV on 7/14 and have put over 400 miles on the car and have a run of the mill 43.4 mpg so far. I gave up an RX-8 (20mpg) that was very fun and invigorating to drive, but I finally made the decision to go green.
Going green for me wasn’t due to environmental reasons, but green for my pocket. Future savings that could be used to take the family on travel vacations, etc., paid for by the gas savings (not spending it on gas) over the years, which should be around $1200 a year at today’s gas prices. In the end, I can’t complain that the change is also better for our environment.
Glad to be part of CleanMPG.com

Welcome! Depending on your commute you might be hitting 45 or higher mpg in a few weeks if you put in to practice some of the information on this site.

So far, so good I’ve increased the mpg in the 06-HCH to 47.1 on the second tank over 474 miles.

Thats over a 10% gain in FE if my calculations are correct. And your just starting! I can't wait to see you increase more as time goes on. Now lets see if we can push you to try to hit 50 mpg ;)
Hi XerEagle:
___First off, welcome to CleanMPG and you came to the right place for learning to push your HCH-II’s tanks!
___I can tell you have the bug and 50 is almost a gimme on your next tank. You are going to be amazed at what she will allow you to receive in the not to distant future ;)
___Good Luck

Thank, I’m not sure I’ll get 50mpg this time around, but the “bug” is working on me and I can see myself working to obtain the 50mpg milestone in the future. As of now, I find it hard to accelerate slowly, since it wasn’t part of my driving habits over the past 25 years or so.
My highway speeds have decreased for the most part and while every car on the highway seems to pass me, I can smile knowing that my average mpg goes up with every mile driven.
I’ll try and contribute on CleanMPG.com, due to the nature of the postings I have read on this site. A vast amount of knowledge is here and it’s not presented in a demeaning manner, but one of sharing knowledge to whoever wants it.

I have been steadily getting better and better FE since purchasing the HCH II. On my last tank of gas I averaged 52.8mpg over 513.1 miles. :Banane04: Oh what a feeling! Oops it’s a Honda not a Toyota, but it’s still a hybrid…;)
I obtained this by accelerating up to speed fairly quickly (2K to 3K rpm) and then trying to us a pulse and glide method to keep my instantaneous mpg high. I then drive the speed limit or a little less in the 45mph zones. A/C is on most of the time, but don’t try and freeze myself with it. This also included driving with a family of 4 in the car some of the time.
My description of a pulse and glide method is as follows:
1. Pulse to 2 to 3mph over speed limit, glide back to speed limit while monitoring the Instantaneous Fuel Economy gauge. It will spike at 100mpg and stay that way for a while.
2. Take note of the pitch of the road, is it level, sloping up or down.
3. I then pulse up the slope (usually short period of using more fuel) and then glide for longer periods while maintaining speed, again peaking the gauge at 100mpg.
