View Full Version : "Service Soon" Wrench alert?

So I'm driving into work this morning and less than a mile from home the familiar beep sounds and I think that I must be getting my first warning that I have have 50 miles to empty. But no, this message that I've never seen before comes up that says "Service Soon" and a yellow wrench lights up to the upper right of the speedometer. So I stare at it for a few seconds, then click "Set" to clear it and keep going. The truck drove fine over the next 14.5 miles, but the message reappeared 4 mores times. When I finally got to work, I checked for codes using the sgii and got nothing. I used the FEH system check and it said everything was normal.

So does anyone have experience with this behavior?

I just crossed 23,100 on the odo. I'm at 8,100 on this oil change (5w30 syn) and even the FEH display said it was at still 23% left. It has not been acting strange in any other way, so I wondering if this is some sort of "timer" that goes off, so that I will take it into the dealer? I must admit that I haven't been to the dealer since I purchased it in Mar 07, so I don't look forward to finding the Ford dealer that actually has a certified hybrid tech who could look at it. So any help on figuring that out would be helpful as well.

Thanks,
Rob

You could try monitoring the Battery Control Module for DTC's with the following xgauge:

TXD: 0745220200
RXF: 046205020600
RXD: 3008
MTH: 000100010000
NAM: BTC

This will display the number of stored and pending DTC's from the Battery Control Module. If you get a non-zero display, then you have a battery DTC.

Did you have the battery harness work done?

So I setup this xGauge, then make it one of my 4 displays, and watch it to see if it ever goes to non-zero (probably right before or during the alert?)

BTW, what are DTC's

I was not aware of battery harness work that needs to be done. Do you have a link for it? I monitor the myford website to try and keep up with these things.

So does this wrench light usually mean something is going on with the battery pack? Or could it mean other things too?

Thank you for your insights!

You don't have to continuously display the BTC xgauge, just code it up and select it when you get the wrench light. DTC - Diagnostic Trouble Code.

The battery harness work may or may not apply to your FEH, but I would call the dealer and have them check your VIN to see if it does.

I had several "STOP SAFELY NOW" messages and resultant shut down before the work was done, but none since. Some claimed better mileage and smoother start/stop after the work was done.

Not sure about Ford, but in many GM cars, the wrench light indicates a DTC set for (B)ody, (C)hassis, or (T)ransmission, with the usual engine light reserved for the (P)owertrain codes. So it's possible that something set a B, C, or T code and the wrench light popped on.

I had this happen on my FEH today! Sure enough, the BTC xgauge displayed 1. The Scangauge couldn't find it using the scan function, but after much work I managed to extract the following code: B1239 which is the blend door driver failure. The SERVICE SOON message and wrench light went away after key cycling, but the BTC still displays 0001.

I managed to get the following freeze frame data:

Battery air temp: 86F
Max battery module temp: 89.6F
Max battery module delta temp: 41F
Maximum discharge limit: 30.0kW
Maximum charge limit: 22.5kW

I haven't had the battery harness work done and according to the dealer, mine is not on the list to need it

... but after much work I managed to extract the following code: B1239 which is the blend door driver failure ...

So how did you extract the B1239 from the sgii? Because if my wrench lights up again, I would like to be able to know the code prior to going into the dealer, which I'll need to do, because based on the link you posted about correcting the B1239, I don't feel confident that I could do it, but I would like to have some knowledge before I take it into them.

Thanks for the knowledge,
- Rob

I had this code, and the dealer replaced a part. See my thread regarding this B1239 code and TSB 07-25-12. Wish I had see your post so I could have read it with my SGII.

After the B1239 code is set and the blend door is replaced, how is the code cleared from the SG or from the car's memory?

I think it depends on what the status of the DTC is. IIRC the following xgauge should clear a TBCM DTC, but I'll have to go back and check to be sure.

TXD: 074514FF00
RXF: 0454100000
RXD: 2010
MTH: 000100010000
NAM: CLR

If this displays FF00 then the DTC should be cleared.

I have verified that this clears the DTCs. It also clears all of the freeze frame data so I would advise removing the xgauge after the FF00 display is achieved. This will prevent any future DTCs from being accidentally cleared if the CLR xgauge pops up when stepping through the xgauges.
