I've subscribed and read the forums for a week or so. I was about to write up a lenghty thread about a small experiment of mine and noticed you didn't know me at all! Before you'd think I'm crazy, I'm gonna let you know that I actually am. :D

I'm a 29 y-o, soon to be dad, French-Canadian (excuse my accent :p ). I work in the graphic design industry, but I'm also a car nut. My dad repairs old VWs, and I grew up in his garage (sadly I wasn't interested in engines back then, so my knowledge now is a fraction of what it could have been).

My car is a 4th gen. Jetta TDI 1999. Mods include bigger injector nozzles, tuning chip and lowered suspension. Gets about 5.5L/100km (43 mpg) in summer, and 6.2L/100km (38 mpg) winter. I only had it for 9 months now, so my figures are constantly improving as I get used to the car and more inclined on fuel economy.

I'm not *that* careful on my fuel consumption, but I consider myself a more efficient driver than most. I know I could squeeze more from my tanks for sure.
+
I try and manage my trips together.
I often coast to stops.
I usually accelerate in a moderate fashion.
Idle?
Cruise control!

-
I often drive faster than the speed limits, but barely. Not enough to get speeding tickets. :D
Cruise control in hilly regions.
I don't mind using the A/C (at higher speeds. In city I roll down the windows)
No skidplate on my car. Yet.

I'm looking forward sharing tips and tricks with all you guys, and I hope you'll enjoy my future posts. :woot:

welcome - there is a dedicated group of TDI drivers here - they have their very own diesel forum here at cleanmpg - scroll down the forums until you see the diesel forum.

A Canadian gets something on order of 70 MPG from his circa 1999 TDI - he is sure to offer some great tips.
