I just picked up a 2000 Civic EX yesterday for $2500! It has high miles, but was well maintained. It is a 5 speed, and is a lot of fun to drive. Here are some pics.

Nice find. $2500 sounds like a steal.

Congratulations as that looks like a nice ride for the price. Just curious - how many miles?

232k, but even with those miles kbb says it's worth $4900. It does need an O2 sensor, and an AC clutch. Both pretty easy diy fixes. Esp the O2 sensor. Two of the hubcaps could use replacing, but that is just cosmetic.

Wow!! That's a lot of miles! It sure doesn't look like it has that many!

That looks GREAT for the mileage. Mine has 165k, and looks much worse. :o:rolleyes:

Well, the last 5 years it has been used for an 80 mile daily commute. 95% of that was highway. So it's not as bad as it seems. Plus these cars go for 300k+ right? Right? Please say yes!

Sweet! But I figure for what I paid even if something happens and I have to rebuild it I'm still ahead. I have a garage, and my brother had rebuilt Datsun, Mazda, and VW 4 cyl engines. And none of those cars were as nice as this one. I just hope it lasts a year or two.

Nice pick up! You should be easily headed for 300k in that car. Even still, it is just about the easiest car in existence to work on. The engine is super simple.

I've had several Honda mechanics try to buy my 01 Accord off me, it has 120k on it. They all seem to think 300k is no prob on these cars.

That was a steal for that price even with the miles. I would guestimate that with the drive you described plus the visual look of the vehicle that the wear equivalent would be more like a 125,000 mile car. You should get much MORE than 300,000 out of it. The 2-door street value makes them much more in demand too! Remember: Fast & Furious

The hatchback model is worth even more, it's ridiculous.

My last car was a 97 Civic HB I sold for the same price I had paid for it two years prior...

Just got back from DMV. FYI, in Virginia if you pay more than $1500 under blue book value you are required to have a bill of sale or you pay tax on the blue book price. So I paid it. I figured it would cost me as much in gas to go get a bill of sale as I would save, plus 3 hours of my time!

In Texas, you pay taxes on blue book, period. This is new from a couple years ago.

93Hatch,

That was a steal indeed, it looks like they took good care of the car and with what you described of their commute you will get many more miles out of it. When I bought my civic I first looked at used cars but when I saw they had the same price as brand new one I took the brand new one. Good choice

Congrats on your new ride, and welcome back to the world of Civics. With a manual tranny, you have big potential there.

Thanks! I have wanted this exact car for probably 9-10 years. This generation of Civic in silver that is.

Yeah, I bet the newer ones are nice, but I've always liked the style of the 96-00 model. I have to fight the urge to just get in it and drive. It's too much fun! I'm still trying to get used to the cramped quarters though. After the Accord this thing seems tiny.

I just bumped the tire pressure to sidewall max. They were all over the place before. One of them even read 15 psi! I have a question though. One of my tires doesn't match the others, and the max sidewall pressure is 35 on that one. The others are 44. What do I do in this situation?

I've read that for safety and handling, at least the two front tires should match each other, and the two back should match each other. Different people have different tolerances for these things. If the odd tire is the same size and rating as the other three, you may be able to get by ok as is. If the odd tire is different:

1) If the tires have a lot of life in them, replace the oddball and the worst of the other three.

2) If they're all looking pretty worn, go ahead and replace all 4.

3) It's too much hassle. Get rid of the HX. I'm a nice guy, so I'll take it off your hands for the same price you paid for it. ;)

Yes, like fanamingo said, I have been told by a tire tech that tires should match PSI left/right. Since more weight is on the front tires, I personally would put the 35max tire in the rear, pump the rears up to 40, and the fronts up to 44. But if you are uncomfortable with going beyond max, but the rears at 35. Depends on what you are comfortable with, but I have had no problems at 50 PSI (max=44).

1) The tires do have plenty of life in them. I will probably put the odd one on the back for now.

2) My neighbor is the tire manager at a Bridgestone/Firestone shop so I'll get the friends and family discount (cost + 10%) when I do get new tires.

3) It's an EX, not an HX. No thanks, I'll keep this car for some time I think! See if I can get 300k+ out of it.

BTW, where in VA are you?

Just noticed you have a 95 Tercel. One of the other cars I was looking at was a 95 Tercel with 5 speed. The guy wanted $2k (kbb was around $1k), and it had 170k miles. Not a bad deal, but this Civic was in much better condition and much better curb appeal!

Do you have a link to a thread about a grill block for this car?

Click on "my rides". Basically, anything you can cut to shape and press-fit into the space. I like having 4 separate pieces, divided top-bottom and left-right. I can adjust to conditions very easily - pull a piece out or press it back in.

I just hit the halfway mark (approx) on my first tank and the trip od says 203 miles. About the same as halfway in the Accord, but of course that tank was much bigger!

So on the way home last night I my Civic above 3k rpm, and it really accelerates nicely up there. Sounds kind of cool too. Ruh roh!

Well, I have to say EX's are common! It's the HX M/T that's so rare! What your car is is a faster more luxurious ride, especially with a sunroof.

And my half tanks -
393 to 400 - 51.15 mpg
280 to 300 - about 42 mpg
a 203 half tank would really be suffering for me, maybe it'd be a 30 mpg tank.

I'd consider an EX a low budget fuel efficient luxury car. But you got a good deal for your price.

Actually I got 38.5 mpg fpr this tank. And that was with 2 days of playing around occasionally with acceleration. Even so, most people's eyes bug out when I mention 38 mpg!

I might be too late but you might not need a new ac clutch. If the clutch engages but not all the way your clutch plate is warn. You can remove one of the spacers behind it and it should work. I did this 2 years ago on my '98 and the air runs great the couple of times I break down and use it [usually because of complaints from my girlfriend].

Not too late! How do you get to it to work on it? Any pics or anything from when you did it?

No pics but I'll take a look at my car after work to refresh my memory as to what was involved with the fix and then post something.

Yeah it is tight in there. You'll need to go from underneath, take off the plastic skirting so you can get to it. Here's the link from where I originally found the solution . The post number seven was the one that worked for me, on the next page someone explains how to get the clutch plate off. Hope this helps and be careful, especially under the car (a good set of ramps will make things easier). http://www.hondacivicforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46053

You know it's funny. This tank averaged 40ish mpg! And that is including a fair amount of heavy acceleration. Not racing or anything, but I get up to the PSL REALLY fast more than a few times! But then again I also have been FASing more as well as I figure out good places to do it.
