Hypermilers say little things have big impact (http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080814/BIZ01/808140307)

Covington, across from Cincinnati. All built in the last 10 years. Better here than 20 miles out in the middle of nowhere.

Starts out good, but the ending as usual with the AAA hinting of an army of semi drafters, etc as large as the distracted cellphone drivers... :( - Ed.

Looking for a way to strike back at high gas prices without trading in your four-door for a scooter?

No matter what you drive, you can get 20 percent more miles per gallon without spending an extra dime. No engine modifications, no pricey additives. All it takes is a new attitude from you and new driving habits to turn your gas guzzler into a mechanical camel.

That is the message of "hyper- milers," a small but growing class of motorists obsessed with squeezing every inch of travel out of every gallon of gas they buy.

Their most important tool: relaxing.

"I used to be the guy who did 75 (mph) in the left lane," Auston Hensley of Fort Thomas said. "Now, I'm the guy who does 55 in the right lane." The difference, he said, is his attitude. "It's not a race. ... If you can get that out of your mind, that is half of it right there."

Hensley, who drives a 2000 Toyota Echo - which according to the Environmental Protection Agency gets an estimated 32 mpg under normal driving conditions - said his record so far for a full tank of gas is 61.6 mpg.

Hensley and Jud Engels, also of Fort Thomas, organized a Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky group through CleanMPG.com, a Web site created by Wayne Gerdes, the leading modern proponent of hypermiling.

The local group meets periodically to compare statistics and sometimes compete on short courses.

Gains of 40 percent to 50 percent abound among hypermilers. It's not uncommon for dedicated hypermilers to double a car's EPA mpg rating under the right circumstances. The record is more than 200 mpg - in a hybrid on a closed course with copious coasting… http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080814/BIZ01/808140307

I'd say the article is positive inspite of the dwelling on these reckless hypermilers that have not been spotted.
