View Full Version : Forgive me for I have sinned
tbaleno 07-22-2006, 09:27 PM I heard that someone did a 121 in the mpg challange and I was saying "I don't know if wayne can beat that." Then the wind picked up and I doubted some more. Finally a down pour. Now I was confident he wouldn't do it.
Okay so my sin. Wayne ended up maxing the display at 150.
I think I owe wayne a month of gas or something as penance.

Were not worthy! :D Good job Wayne!
HyChi 07-23-2006, 09:30 AM Astonishing! That's the way to show 'em, Wayne!!! Congrats! :D
Hi Guys:
___Believe me, it was the fact Billy loaned me his perfect Insight and Linda’s (HF 2006 Coordinator of almost everything) hypermiling course. Not only was I driving the absolutely most pristine and capable Insight in the entire world, that course was the best FE course I have ever and I mean ever had the opportunity to drive. It included long undulating hills that seemed to go on forever. Better then Pittsburgh given there were very few lights except for right near the HF2006 grounds themselves. The rain and the strong head winds came about on the last 1.25 miles of the course while in a FAS down a super long downhill into a light so it did not take much from Billy Insight’s at all. God is his Insight Sweet with a capital S! Anyone with an extremely well setup Insight, a little training, and some rather large Cajone’s would be punching out 120 + after just a few minutes. I have to thank Bradlee again for the use of his Insight during the Tour Del Sol to help me figure out the rates and ranges as it made all the difference when I got behind the wheel of Billy’s magnificently maintained and extremely well setup Insight 5-speed. I do not think Billy enjoyed bringing his Insight up under Forced Charge from 3 Bars of SoC this morning but that should have lasted just 5 minutes after he began his trek back to Washington State ;)
___I cannot wait to take Linda and her CVT based 06 Insight out on that course the next time the Madison Hybrid Group has a gets together. I think she is going to be shocked as to what she is going to be able to achieve with a little help and I am talking big numbers out of a CVT.
___Linda, remind me to bring the SG-II up for that one as we might just need it given the Insight’s FCD limitations!
___Good Luck

philmcneal 07-23-2006, 03:16 PM cvt more potenious than a 5spd? no way!!!
haha i saw 120 mpg once, but once you start accelerating say good bye to it ;(
Sledge 07-23-2006, 04:36 PM 150? Unbelievable :D

Well you may remember me predicting 135 for Wayne after my MPG run. I wasn't concerned about the rain because the last portion was downhill. Congrats to the Master! I doubt if there could be a better hypermiling course to be found anywhere. Twas a priveledge to compete. I was happy with my 99.9.
Hi Dan:
___Thanks for the vote of confidence ;) You were right about that course, truly stupendous for hypermiler’s.
___I just took Chuck out for an Insight Clinic in his 5-speed and we pegged the FCD out again over 13.1 + RT miles. It wasn’t nearly as easy as we were back and forth in the 145 – 150.0 range until the last 3 or so miles. We had all his luggage, him, and I including the A/C equipped Insight and the right passenger seat. I am really starting to miss my Insight right about now as you can imagine :( I think Billy’s Insight was pushing into the 160 - 170 mpg range and Chuck’s was in the 152 - 157 mpg range as we pulled back into my drive a few minutes ago. Linda’s CVT based Insight is going to be fun to play with on that course if she is still willing.
___And about that 99.9. Dan, you want to tell them what you nailed via Scan Gauge reading? It was the Marathon days all over again :D
___Good Luck

philmcneal 07-23-2006, 11:08 PM can you guys give details what the course was like? how many lights? stops? and fas points do you guys get to do? and the average speed throughout the whole course? does it not have a uphill portion? haha that's kinda cheating then isn't it :P? a good course must have all the elements of real world traffic conditions ;)
tbaleno 07-23-2006, 11:17 PM I hear the course was designed to exploit the hybrids strengths. The idea was to make a course that allowed decent mileage. Afterall, the event was to promote hybrids.
Hi Phil:
___Tom is exactly right. I was speaking with Dan after the FE runs and he thought he could have achieved at best an 80 mpg segment in his Del Sol or VX. I might have been able to touch 70 in the Accord if I was extremely lucky. Competing against a hybrid on this mother of all Hybrid courses would be a lesson in futility as the hybrids would eat any non-hybrid alive in short order.
___To help everyone that did not have the opportunity to drive Linda’s perfectly laid out course, Chuck went out this morning and took some spectacular pics of some of the country roads we drove. I mean miles and miles of 50 mph or less country roads in which a hybrid would be able to destroy the best of the best SI and CI-ICE equipped automobiles on the planet. Chuck said he would post them once he got back to Dallas so expect them by Tuesday or Wednesday night. If only all of our commutes included those 20 miles, we all owned an Insight, and it was > 70 degrees every day, and … Goodness gracious, all of our lmpg’s would be in the 110 - 160 + range!
___Good Luck

Linda 07-26-2006, 07:41 PM Hi, guys!
Wayne, yes, I'm still very excited to see what my little CVT can do. I'm sorry the rains came, or we would have had a chance Saturday night to exploit those 20 miles of good road!
You guys are awfully complimentary of the course. I'm glad! Yes, I wanted a course that would make even inexperienced drivers feel happy about their cars, and I think that worked. Of course, I wasn't expecting numbers quite as good as you guys got -- you annihilated my expectations. Good for you guys! :-)
To answer the Q about the course, it was 20 miles of gentle hills, surface roads, 25-50 mph, and according to the topo map (thanks, Doug!), 200 foot change in elevation. There were 13 turns, 5 stoplights (mostly close to the facility), and I think just 3 other stop signs.
The *real* challenge will be finding a similar course next year. <grin>
Oh, by the way, remember the horse riding paddock on the right as you neared the stop sign of Caine and M? They *closed the road* on Sunday -- parked their pickup trucks right across it! I think it was in response to all the "traffic" on Saturday. I'm just glad they didn't decide to close it earlier, that's all I can say.
See you at Milwaukee HG in August, and M(adison)HG after that!
~Linda
tbaleno 07-26-2006, 08:09 PM linda, one thing you can look at for next years course is making as many turns right turns as possible. If you need turns, right turns are the way to go. You only need to worry about traffic from one direction.
When I heard Delta Flyer say they closed off that road on Sunday I thought the same thing "Its a good thing the course wasn't closed off saturday"
Chuck 07-27-2006, 01:27 AM Linda,
I would bet Wayne can take your CVT Insight past 150mpg. Tonight I got 181mpg over 3 miles. While you can't take such short distances very seriously, I'm very inexperienced at this, leading me to believe Wayne can do it.
Hi Chuck:
___That is why I am so eager to get into her CVT and find out what it is worth?
___Linda, great job on the course once again …
___Good Luck
___Wayne
lakedude 07-27-2006, 02:15 AM A fantastic effort!
How it that Insight modified?
Hi Lakedude:
___Billy’s Insight had its 2 mirrors removed, an internal video camera facing the rear installed in lieu of the mirrors, and the Passenger seat was removed. About 40 #’s worth in total. Randall’s included MIMA and Mike’s consisted of both MIMA and a total EV solution off a drop down fifth wheel.
___Good Luck
___Wayne
