Which model ? Where was this ? Distance ? What techniques did you use ? malherbe 08-09-2008, 04:30 PM Vw passat, 1999 4c with tiptronic auto. No modifications, in fact the airdam under the oilpan broke off because of a faulty oil change. I drove about 50 mi no stong winds. I followed a truck to a count of 3-4 sec and coasted down every hill. There was some construction, about 5 mi of 55 mph. Overall slight down-hill drive as it was along the missouri river. No a/c with windows open about 1/2 to 1 inch and the sunroof cracked a tad. I believe hypermiling is the wave of the future, and I believe the first manufacturer to have the will and insite to build a car engeneered for hypermiling will have a lot of sales. JusBringIt 08-09-2008, 04:37 PM sounds like you did pretty good. What do you usually get? dont forget to log your mileage ;) malherbe 08-09-2008, 09:40 PM 4th trip on this road. I do not comonly drive it. last times were 35 -40 mpg, but this is the first full out hypermiling trial. I( do not know how to log my mpg's. Vooch 08-10-2008, 04:12 PM The VW MFD (especially on the B4 & B5 models) is known to be erratic in its MPG calculations - make certain you validate the MFD when you fill up. (my MFD is anywhere between 1% and 5% off) These are great numbers and I'd really like to see you keep a log on the site. I find the biggest issue with the VW triptonic is keeping it in 6th gear - it tends to downshift too early (circa 42 MPH). malherbe 08-11-2008, 08:32 AM I did check the Mfd when the car was new, it seemed accurate. It followed the trend one would expect for a new car, slowly increasing mpg's untill about 20,000 mi. The terain here is ideal, rolling hills. My return trip, last nite, i got 40 mph, but had to slow down as there were no trucks to follow. malherbe 08-11-2008, 01:59 PM 40 mpg's at 60 mph Vooch 08-12-2008, 08:16 AM what PSI are your tires ? are you running 91 or 87 ? - real gas or E10 ? What rpm are you running at 60 MPH ? How many miles do you get out of a typical tank ? My HWY EPA is precisely the same as yours, so we should be seeing similar results - we have different drive trains, so I am trying to understand your technique. There is no way I get 40 MPG at 60 MPH steady state - more like 37 - 38 MPG at 60 MPH. In order to break 40 MPG, I have to drive 55. I am getting 42+ MPG at 55 MPH - last weekend, I had a 102 mile trip (20 miles suburban, 80 miles highway) and was able to get 43.5 MPG. malherbe 08-12-2008, 01:39 PM 50-55psi on low resistance tires. 91 gas. I was coasting on hills behind the truck. My scan gauge could be off, I am traveling 600 mi tomorrow, and will check the gauge. malherbe 08-14-2008, 03:34 PM Check of the m scan gauge was dead on accurate at 350 mi. Mpg's- 42 at ~55 pulse and glide w/o drafting. 41 with ac and 34.5 after racing at 80 mph and 5 mi @ 3 mph in traffic. The return trip gave similar results, 40 mpg at 60-65 pulse and glide with drafting over 150 mi, with a return trip ave of 38 after increasing the speed becuase of fatigue. I did notice that even slight distractions ( cell phones, and conversations ) cause rather severe adverse results in mpg. The level of concentration needed is quite high. Vooch 08-15-2008, 03:33 PM concentration needed is high are you keeping a log on cleammpg ? vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
