I was talking with a co-worker last night and hypermiling came up (as it often does with me) and he was telling me about how he only got 28 MPG and that even driving slow he only got 31 MPG. If I remember right he said he drives a 2002 Honda. I bet him that I could get at least 35 MPG in his car. He was telling me that 35 was impossible in his car and that it wasn't even rated for close to that. I asked him what his EPA rating was he said it was 26/31 (I may be wrong on that). I told him that was about what my car was rated for and I used to get 28 MPG. I'm sure that if I could show him I could convert him. Unfortunately, I have no way to prove to him that he could get better mileage in his car. I did direct him here though, so hopefully he will come for a visit and try a few things.

Awesome! Spread the word and show them the way. I think that 35 is a very reasonable expectation on any Honda rated at 26/31 in good running condition. Some folks beat 35 in small trucks and SUVs. By the way, going from 28 to 31 is a great start, a 10% improvement already.

Just an update. He said he checked out the site and I mentioned Wayne's Beating the EPA article to him. But, he does seem interested in it. Unfortunately, he is leaving for another job in about 3 weeks so I'm hoping I can get him converted soon. On the other hand, if I am able to convert him he would have a whole new group of people to convert to hypermiling.

It's worth a try to tap into that domino effect. The article might have been a bit overwhelming for him, so try giving him some of the easy effective tips, such as max sidewall PSI and NICE-on coasting down hills. If that can bump him up to 33 or 34, he just might get hooked into trying more advanced techniques. ;)

I wish I had a scanguage that I could use to show him just what his car is capable of. I could also win $100 since I bet him (jokingly of course) that I could hit 35 in his car. Unfortunately the only way I can prove it to him is for him to change his habits for at least a tank.

Mabye you two could go for a drive if he is really open minded, just fill up, drive around 40 miles or so, then top off and do the math. that 100 clams can help you buy your scangauge! :D

Not a bad idea. I may have to try that.
