I just got the ScanGauge II (http://www.amazon.com/ScanGauge-Compact-Multifunction-Computer-Customizable/dp/B000AAMY86) and am having fun trying to figure it all out.
I don't think I can do this without buying another gauge and a cable, but is it possible to display the current MPG ("on-the-fly") AND the MPG for the current trip at the same time on the main screen?
Thanks.

yes, Re: The SGII Xgauge Database

Hi Ricardo:
___If you have a 3.15 Firmware equipped ScanGauge (X-Gauge capable), you can create the X-Gauge with the above coding
The X-Gauge aMPG for current trip or segment is TXD all 0’s, RXF of 8000 0000 0000, RXD all 0’s and Mth all 0’s.

Yes it's possible. You can even get tank mpg at the same time! You get the trip mpg by programming the x-gauge function (in the ScanGaugeII and X-Gauge manual) and then there is a section about Trip which tells which number to program for each Trip function. If I could figure it out, anyone can!
Yes. The current on-the-fly mpg is an X-Gauge function. The booklet tells you how to set this as one of your on-screen gauges. It was easy enough that I could successfully follow the directions (and that's saying something).
I use the coolant temperature (because I have a radiator block), the TPS, so I can instantly see how much I'm pressing the gas pedal, the current trip MPG, and the instantaneous MPG (which is the X-gauge reading).

I did the tank mpg as a 80000000000 for the RXF field...is that correct? The 8 says it's for trip, and didn't say if it should be for tank, but that's what worked.

Hi Phlack:
___Almost… In the TXD, you will want 04 setup for Tank FE. As your current FE changes with each new segment, your display will continue to show current, not tank if you do not use 00. TXD = 04 and RXF at 8000 0000 0000 will give you Tank FE if that is what you want.

Hmmm, does sound familiar about putting in the 04, but I'll have to double-check. It seems to be working right. I just didn't know if there were any other numbers I had to stick in. They just didn't spell it out in the manual on how to do it...had to figure it out. And I'm really suprised that wasn't a standard gauge.
