2009 Jetta TDI – 30/40 mpg with the stick. Sedan and SportWagen start at $21,990 and $23,590 respectively.
Volkswagen announced that buyers of the Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen are eligible for a $1,300 Federal Income Tax Credit. The Internal Revenue Service has issued a certification letter affirming that the vehicles qualify for the Advanced Lean Burn Technology Motor Vehicle income tax credit.
“The $1,300 tax credit provides an even greater value to the upcoming Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen,” said Mark Barnes, COO, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “Our clean diesel vehicles offer consumers the fuel efficiency that they’re looking for while providing power, utility, performance, safety and excellent value.”
The Jetta TDI is rated at 30 mpg city/40 mpg highway with the 6-speed MT and 29 mpg city/40 mpg highway with the DSG based AT on the 08 EPA test cycles.
The Jetta TDI models come standard with Volkswagen’s Prevent and Preserve Safety System consisting of numerous standard safety features. Both the Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen include six airbags and Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) for added protection. Optional rear side airbags are available.
Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen showcase an alternative fuel vehicle with no compromises. Fuel efficiency, good performance and convenience are standard with the 50-state compliant Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen models. Both now meet California’s tough LEV-II emissions standards.
TDI’s are currently available to test drive at you local Volkswagen dealers and will be available for purchase this August.
bestmapman 07-29-2008, 11:33 AM I took a test drive in one yesterday. They only had the DSG. Compared to my current 06 Jetta TDI, it has moderately more pickup and is definately quiter. I didn't like the DSG although it worked well, I am partial to manual transmissions.
Robert Lastick 07-29-2008, 12:12 PM Same fuel economy as my RRSB Saturn. EPA on it is 29 city, 40 highway.
For $20,000.00, I'm sorry, but I am going to have to ask for more!
Radio_tec 07-29-2008, 12:39 PM For the price I could live with the 29/36 mileage on the Yaris. I thought the TDI was supposed to compete with the Prius on fuel mileage anyway. What gives?
Not enough MPG to contend with the Prius. Most will pass on this unless they really want a diesel sedan that isn't over 24k.

Too much diesel hype...
Hi Radio tec:
___Just remember what the European Civic 2.2L iCDTi did to the European NEDC (35/52 after conversion to the EPA) at over 84 over a week long drive. The Prius’ best with that much highway was 76 and that was a lot less highway and a lot more low speed P&G too! Let us just wait and see. The Audi A4’s with the Jetta TDI’s motor pulled over 70 mpg on the highway last month in a European FE challenge of sorts and I suspect the Jetta TDI is worth a lot more than the EPA’s 34 combined too… Let us wait and see.

For the price I could live with the 29/36 mileage on the Yaris. I thought the TDI was supposed to compete with the Prius on fuel mileage anyway. What gives?Look at the CAFE numbers instead of the CR round-down EPA figures. The CAFE figures put the HCH at HW:65.0, Prius at HW:64.8, Jeta TDI HW:58.1
Those are the top 3 highway cars in the US for 2009. So The normal bonehead barreling down the road will get HCH HW:40, Prius HW:40, Jeta TDI HW:42. Diesels are a bit more bone-head proof than other cars. So I think most bone-head speed freaks out there will be amazed that a car as "actuals" on the highway above 35 mpg ("actuals" = 80 mph with bouncy RPM).

even if the mpg is above rated you still have to contend with the high price of diesel.:(
even if the mpg is above rated you still have to contend with the high price of diesel.:(Go grease car. You can stew bio-diesel for well below $4 / gallon. Heck you can even buy it off the shelf for about $4.25

Diesels On Schedule - But EPA Hurts VW's Feelings
Volkswagen's rollout of the diesel-engine Jetta already had been delayed from an earlier launch slated for this spring. And the company seemingly was stung when the Environmental Protection Agency released fuel economy figures of 30 mpg city/41 mpg highway for the diesel-powered '09 Jetta.
The Jetta TDI's EPA economy numbers are a solid 40 percent better than the 21/29 of the Jetta with the base 2.5-liter gasoline 5-cylinder engine - but not the kind of eye-popping figures for which VW apparently had been hoping. The Jetta TDI's 30-mpg city figure, in particular, is nearly achieved by some gasoline-engine compact cars, and more crushingly from a competitive standpoint, pales in comparison to hybrid-electric vehicles such as the Toyota Prius and its outsized 48-mpg city rating.
There are indications the EPA's newly adopted fuel-economy test procedure, adopted beginning with the '08 model year, may conservatively estimate diesel-vehicle performance by as much as 18 percent - and after seeing the EPA's figures for the Jetta TDI, VWoA quickly organized a response in the form of third-party testing that yielded a more palatable 38 mpg city/44 mpg highway. Bloggers on several diesel-oriented forums believe these figures still may undersell the Jetta TDI's real-world fuel economy.
Hi NoFlash:
___We are on top of it and I did not add it because it was useless information. It doesn’t matter about a third party doing an FE test to counteract the EPA because they are not doing the EPA tests including the 20 degree Cold soak. VW knew about the FE numbers probably over a year ago as they are the ones who passed on the final 5-test FE data to the EPA. I can bet the EPA has yet to see a single 09 TDI on their own dynamometers. The Manufacturers are the ones who do the tests and forward the results. The EPA only verifies ~ 20% of these results to keep the manufacturers honest.

Is the RRSB a special Saturn? The best 2000 Saturn SL gets 25/36 on the new EPA ratings.
Radio_tec, I have a feeling the TDI will be quite competitive with the Prius on the highway. City is probably a different story but then again it's hard for anything to compete with a Prius in the city.

The interesting thing to me is that EPA is seemingly working hard to downplay the excellent fuel mileage that is obtainable with these European diesels.
Now, lets see. Who would benefit from that???

Nope, the RRSB Saturn is 100% stock. The EPA rating was taken off the Cleanmpg mileage log for the car. The vehicle is used almost 100% for my daily commute from DeKalb to Rockford. It is 90% rural back roads which allows me to achieve high MPG numbers.
