View Full Version : MPG Gauge ?
Mxdude 07-25-2008, 07:22 AM Has anyone here converted a mpg gauge from one car into another? For example the mid eighties Dodge cars came with a small read out that showed real time mpg as well as trip mpg. Has anyone taken somthing like this and installed it in to a different make car? I am sure that there is a way to do it. I am looking for other options for a mpg gauge. Thanks
PaleMelanesian 07-25-2008, 07:59 AM The guys over at Ecomodder are developing an open-source DIY kit that should work on any car. I think the parts cost around $30.
Mxdude 07-25-2008, 03:39 PM I see that the new Saturn Astra's have a factory mpg gauge. Anyone know if this will work in my 2000 Saturn sl with some modifications?
Nevyn 11-26-2008, 03:03 PM I don't know if there is still interest, but for non - OBDII cars, the "MPGuino" as it's known is fully fleshed out and available as a DIY kit, or you can buy your own parts and build it from scratch.
Computer board, LCD, and a couple of other parts needed total between $30 and $45 bucks. You can buy a full kit, programmed and ready to install, from here:

jdhog 11-26-2008, 03:09 PM Are you familiar with ScangaugeII? Plugs into OBDII port and gives all kinds of instant readouts.
Kacey Green 11-26-2008, 09:36 PM He said for non OBDII cars, pre-96 and such
jdhog 11-26-2008, 10:09 PM Ok, it read to me more like it was intended for a 2000 Saturn. Non obd is a different kettle of fish, that MPGuino stuff looks cool.

Nevyn 11-29-2008, 09:01 PM Parts for mine should show up next week; let me get it assembled and I'll post up some pics and impressions.

Thanks.
I just went to order one, it's now out of stock. :(
drat.... had my credit card out and ready.
I was going to make it a project for me and my daughter, during winter break.
O well, until it is back in stock I will look for the points to hook it up.
Have you found the points to hook it up?
1.Vehicle Speed Sense (VSS)
2. An Injector signal (the low/gnd/switched) side
3. 12V Unswitched (always on) Power
4. A Ground point
1 and 2 are the only ones I have in question, with a little looking under the hood I should be able to find them. it would save a lot of time if I was able to find a wiring diagram for my Mazda tribute.
3 and 4 are easy.

Hopefully I will join you in posting on it.
Pierce 12-01-2008, 05:06 PM This seems like a good idea! I've always wanted to get a hold of some sort of fuel economical instrumentation for my older road mate. (1993 Accord DX)
Too bad I don't know how to assemble it, it let alone install one in my vehicle. Auughh!
Thanks for the link, perhaps I can test one out at a clinic or a hybrid fest.
Nevyn 12-02-2008, 11:04 AM I could assemble it for you, but install I couldn't be of much help for. I have a friend with an Accord, but I don't know the year - I might be able to provide a little help with finding the VSS and Injector Pulse lines, but not much.
