View Full Version : Hypermiling: Driving Tricks Stretch Miles Per Gallon
"You're driving with all your senses fully alert — you're hearing, you're seeing, you're watching, your radar is constantly twirling 360 degrees to see what situation is going to come up that I need to anticipate," Cardona said. One of the best tells it like it is :) -- Ed.
Some days on her morning commute, Rani Cardona feels like the stars are aligned. With the green lights timed just right, and a slight tail wind at her back, her Honda Civic Hybrid can really fly. On fumes.
"When you see the gauge springing up toward 100 miles per gallon and you’ve got your foot just perfectly situated and you hold it there, you know, it's just a great feeling," she said. "It's an indescribable feeling, like your car is almost defying the laws of physics and you're just kind of floating on air."
Cardona, an engineer in the Los Angeles area, is a hypermiler. She is part of a community of drivers who devote themselves to squeezing every last mile out of a gallon of gas.
With gasoline prices sky high, and global warming fears on everyone's minds, fuel efficiency is an increasingly popular notion. But few drivers know what a difference their driving habits can make, and few take the challenge as seriously as hypermilers.
Trigger points
The term "hypermiling" was coined in 2004 by Wayne Gerdes, who started the Web site CleanMPG.com, which has become a hub for fuel efficiency enthusiasts… http://www.livescience.com/environment/080724-hypermiling-drivers.html
Project01SC2 07-24-2008, 07:53 PM I would have to say that this is a really good piece about our culture and about the bad apples.
You know Wayne, here before too long you are going to be a frequent household name! I found out this afternoon that the article I pulled from our local tv station a few days ago was actually a full story on the 6 pm news. I have people coming up to me asking me if this is all BS and then proceed to ask for advice and/or demonstrations. I do hope that this will continue even with the falling gas prices.
philmcneal 07-24-2008, 08:32 PM wayne is a internet superstar after all, theres even jokes about him saving gas, some i get a chuckle out of. But hey if you can't laugh at yourself then why laugh at all?
msirach 07-24-2008, 08:32 PM Great article that has all the points in it. It even clarifies "the renegades." Hopefully more press will continue to print the truth and not conjectures.
Great article. It seems the truth just can't be kept hidden by the AAA's lies. Thanks Rani, for the tip about the shoe. It has saved me lots of gas.
laurieaw 07-24-2008, 10:18 PM great article, rani! ready for another world MPG challenge? ;)
WriConsult 07-24-2008, 10:38 PM Awesome article. Can I presume Rani Cardona is a member here? Who is it? Tarabell?

gas prices haven't started falling in my county yet. I wish they would though :)

___Good Luck

desdemona 07-25-2008, 01:08 AM Awesome article. Great that it really clarified good vs bad techniques AND that they aren't recommended.

lightfoot 07-25-2008, 03:38 AM What she said, plus the quotes from tarabell and msantos are really really good. Especially the one about the Scangauge being as necessary as a scale when you're trying to lose weight.
SlowHands 07-25-2008, 07:19 AM Rani, a very nice article!! I also like the 'renegade' hypermiler comments in the article. This is one of the better articles out there.
PaleMelanesian 07-25-2008, 08:05 AM That's one of the best I've seen in a long time! Thanks, Rani and Manuel and Wayne. :)
Chuck 07-25-2008, 08:13 AM I definitely hope articles like this one are referenced on future hypermiling stories.
Way to go, Rani!
atlaw4u 07-25-2008, 08:14 AM Great balanced article. I especially like Wayne's quote filling tires to the maximum safe pressure listed on them by their manufacturer.
Great article. Well written and to the point.
May be a better term for renagade Hypermilers would outlawmilers.
That gets the hyper out of their name.
A024523 07-25-2008, 11:11 AM Excellent! Thank you Rani! :)
Right Lane Cruiser 07-25-2008, 11:28 AM Great quotes, all! They couldn't have picked a better interviewee in CA. :)
tarabell 07-25-2008, 12:49 PM Thanks all.....This was great fun. Clara asked some good questions and took a lot of personal interest in our efforts. I had a strong feeling this would be an informative story with a positive slant.
I noticed some of the comments posted to the story were very positive as well.
Now I've got two other journalists who want to ride with me hypermiling my HCH-II and perhaps even an FSP or two....I'll let you know how those develop.
PaleMelanesian 07-25-2008, 01:24 PM It's also on the FoxNews site here: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,390121,00.html
Even more distribution. Way to go.
msantos 07-25-2008, 01:56 PM ...

...
Quite true. She even indicated right after the story's release she was going to try out a few techniques herself this upcoming weekend. Perhaps a follow-up/update to this story could be expected? ;)
As usual, I fully agree with everyone regarding the work you did. Totally awesome, and "nailed tight".
Cheers;
MSantos
rhwinger 07-28-2008, 11:28 AM You go girl.:woot:

"You're driving with all your senses fully alert — you're hearing, you're seeing, you're watching, your radar is constantly twirling 360 degrees to see what situation is going to come up that I need to anticipate," Cardona said." You must be some kind of engineer or something.
You make us all proud.
Thanks,
Bob W

It is a nicely formulated statement, however I don't believe the scan gauge is that necessary. A odometer would be a much closer analogy to me.
