To hit the goal of 1101 miles, I need to hold 77.4 or better for the rest of the tank
OK... So everyone I talk to about the Texas Tour immediately dismiss any achievement rendered without AC as nuts/insane/unsafe/sadistic. So I'm attempting a KiloTank with AC. Here are my rules.
AC off at night is OK
AC off at launch (first 1 mile) OK
AC off on final approach (last 1 mile) is OK
If setting auto to 85 triggers the heater instead of AC, then no AC is OK.
All other times, AC must be on and set to 85 or lower.
When recording PIPs and Ticks (prius-speak) I'll record the moment of first occurrence.
So I filled yesterday at 12.5+ gallons ;)
I'm calling a "tick" a drop in the "gas" XGauge. I currently have all 40 ticks (100%) but it did register a momentary drop to 39 yesterday, so, per my rules, that counts as one tick down.
31 miles; 76.7 mpg; Lost first tick ("gas" went from 100% to 97.5%).
I'm currently at 81 mpg, so as long as I can hold over 80, I should be in the realm of possibility.
UPDATE: 10/7/2008 @ 9:10 am CST - FINAL :Banane18:
Hit [1011] then hit [1101]

PaleMelanesian 07-23-2008, 08:11 AM That is a worthy cause, and a great challenge. Good luck!
Right Lane Cruiser 07-23-2008, 09:00 AM That's one heck of a challenge, Dan! I'm looking forward to tracking your results. :D
chandler583 07-23-2008, 09:44 AM Everything is possible in a Prius, by the way, why would someone say that's crazy talk?
Aether glider 07-23-2008, 09:50 AM OK... So everyone I talk to about the Texas Tour immediately dismiss any achievement rendered without AC as nuts/insane/unsafe/sadistic.
People have gotten so soft. When i was a kid we didn't have AC and i lived.
I carry and pick up my 1year old son every day in the prius without AC and he doesn't seem to care.
Of course he could be a hypermiling baby :Banane14:

Of course he could be a hypermiling baby :Banane14:No kidding... I remember going on family vacations, mom, dad, brother, sister and self with 5 pairs of skis and 1 weeks winter supplies, all packed into a VW bug (yes bug, not bus). Drove from Central Texas to Colorodo, 4 years running. Try that today and the government would probably take your kids away for abuse and neglegance sighting that putting a kid in a car for more than 3 hours without a DVD Player and Game Console is wanten and blatnat abuse.
Right now people are looking for excuses. "I can't do that because....." This is just an attempt to take away one of those "because..." clauses.

bestmapman 07-23-2008, 11:16 AM OK Dan, I will join you in an attempt for a 1000 mile tank. I will fill up today and try to stay up with you. I will trade you your A/C for my terrain. I have been getting in the mid 70's for a while now so I think I can punch it up to the low 80's by pushing it to the extreme.
I'll report back after I make my fill. I am going to fill it to the brim so it may take me a while at the pump. Any suggestions there.
[edit] Also, how do you set up the "ticks" in the xgauge. I have the 3.15* so none of my passive gauges work.
Aether glider 07-23-2008, 01:06 PM argggggghhh! If i didn't have this darn ethanol in the tank i'd try too. Make it a group attempt.
I guess i could siphon it all out.
argggggghhh! If i didn't have this darn ethanol in the tank i'd try too. Make it a group attempt.
I guess i could siphon it all out.ha... good luck... I tried to siphon before the Texas Tour and it's darn near impossible. There is a hair-pin turn in the gas tube designed to thwart siphon-ers. Couldn't get my tube to navigate the bend.
11011011
Aether glider 07-23-2008, 01:50 PM oh well maybe next time.
We should seriously try as a group sometime that would be pretty interesting.
And would speak volumes as to the skill of the drivers here.
ok Dan next after the AC will be a January Kilo tank attempt :)

Don't let ethanol be an excuse. I have ethanol in mine. Come on. Go fill your tank and let's have the three of us do this. That would make a good story.
OK... cold front moved in, so I popped some big numbers. Tank is up to 87 mpg at about 75 miles deep.
Showing all ticks and all pips.
Heat wave could kill me... so keep your fingers crossed.
11011011
bestmapman 07-23-2008, 10:00 PM I filled up today and stuffed the tank the best I could. I think I got a full 13 gallons in there. I was at 2 PIPs showing and put 10.9 gal in. I made a double 2x4 ramp. It really worked well. I pulled in and positioned the ramp and then backed up. It went right up on the ramp. It worked perfect. It took about 20 minutes to stuff the tank. I used Dan's technique of slow slow filling. I finally stopped filling when the gas pooled at the top and wouldn't go down.
Here is a pic of the ramp.

bestmapman 07-23-2008, 10:13 PM Here is the end of the first day. This will probably be my best numbers for this attempt. For the next week, I will be making 1 or 2 trips per day to my printer as I am publishing a new map book. It is about 40 miles round trip. This is a great tank, as I filled up at the top of a hill. In fact at one of the highest areas in Cincinnati. So the first day was pretty good.
First day.

Wow! Great work... You put some big dailies up there.

philmcneal 07-24-2008, 01:18 AM u guys must be grateful not having people behind you all the time :) nice!
bestmapman 07-24-2008, 05:12 AM u guys must be grateful not having people behind you all the time :) nice!
Actually, because of the hills in my area, I think I average at least 30 MPH. I will check the scanguage the next time and give the average speed for a segment. At one point on my trips, I am actually limited by traffic. I start this long downhill segment at about 30 MPH and go to warp neutral and have to switch to D at 60 MPH and top out around 65+. Also, on a lot of the uphills, I try to get as much speed as possible and use the SHM numbers to go up the hill as far and as fast as I can. This seems to work the best for me.
Allright... So Jud is in the lead, but I'm not that far out. 88.7 mpg at 86 miles into the tank. I need to hold at least 79.3 for the next 914 miles to hit the mark.
I've still got all PIPs and I'm only one tick down. The second tick hasn't winked yet.
11011011
bestmapman 07-24-2008, 11:02 AM Allright... So Jud is in the lead, but I'm not that far out. 88.7 mpg at 86 miles into the tank. I need to hold at least 79.3 for the next 914 miles to hit the mark.

11011011
I won't be able to sustain those numbers. That first day was a special set due to the terrain. I think from here on out, I will really have to work to stay in the low 80's. I think I can hold it for the 1000 miles, but I will probably be on fumes at the end.
Also, it was uncanny how much fuel went into the Prius using your technique. It took a while, but it kept going in.
My x-guage is challenged with the 3.15* so I can't get the ticks to register.
Aether glider 07-24-2008, 10:52 PM There is no way i can join you guys I have a highway trip next weekend.
I was looking at past kilo tanks and i think Dan found all of them in this thread: except for mine a few weeks back. http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4736&highlight=kilo&page=12
bump.
So I dug through and it looks like and FCD between 86 and 88 is in the KiloTank range. Sounds like you have to make it to 880 without blinking your pip. I can't find a pic for Larry's KiloTank(s) so if anyone has one, could you post it. Also, anyone know what Larry's FCD figures were on his two KiloTanks?
What I have so far:
krousdb: 1007 @ 86.6 fcd
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/...le_Tank_LR.JPG
VaBeachPrius: 1023 @ 85.9 fcd
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/...m/DSC_7101.jpg
DiamondLary: 1056 @ 86.8 calc
NoPhoto
mparrish: 1051 @ 87.3 fcd
https://webspace.utexas.edu/mparrish/misc/DSC02485a.JPG
Earliest (documented) blinking pip at 880.
Well when I got home today, my tank was 493.7 deep at 86.0. I'm adding about 1 tenth every day or two. We'll see where it lands in the next 3 weeks or so.
Think i have the earliest documented flashing pip now @ 760 miles. Stuffing the tank is a must if you can't hold at least 82-83MPG. I ended with 79.6 MPG with a stuffed tank.
So the record for a prius on CleanMPG is 1069 mi (DiamondLarry)
We should really try to push this to the max how about a 1100 mile attempt next month? 1100 miles would be 13 gallons @ 85 MPG. 1200 would require 92.X MPG
Anyone game?
bestmapman 07-25-2008, 07:38 AM I'll be happy with my 1000 tank for the time being. I am counting on stuffing the tank to the max. I think I can hold low 80's, but I am pushing it to the max.
bestmapman 07-25-2008, 11:02 AM Here is my second day numbers.
this was a pretty good day, although my nums are starting to drop. I figure that I have at least 13 gal. stuffed, so I have to average 76.9 total for the tank. This should take me all the way to fuel starve. I expect to continually drop to the low 80's at 1000 miles. The only problem will be if I have to deviate of my planned commute to the printer and back.
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/500/DSC04143.jpg
ok... I'm at 88.6 mpg at 120 miles deep. I've still only seen the first tick wink, the rest are steadfast. By my calcs, I should see the second tick wink at between 108 and 132 miles deep, depending on how much fuel was in the tank at the time of the 12.5 g stuffing.
11011011
bestmapman 07-27-2008, 09:02 PM As of today, I'm at 83.7. Still have all ten pips
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/500/83_7.jpg
Aether glider 07-27-2008, 09:44 PM Does that say 275 miles? You guys are kickin' butt.
132 miles at 88.1 mpg
Still showing 10 pips and all ticks. The first tick is the only one to wink so far. I expect to second tick to wink real soon!
11011011
88.5 mpg @ 151 miles. Still showing all 10 pips, and only the first tick has winked so far.
11011011
bestmapman 07-28-2008, 05:51 PM Here are the latest figures. 84.2 MPG at 362 miles. Still showing all 10 pips. WOW I really stuffed the tank. I wonder when the first pip will fall.
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/500/84_2-362.jpg
philmcneal 07-28-2008, 06:06 PM you guys are so lucky to be driving around areas that don't know what the middle finger is :)
you guys always drive in two lane roads i assume? kinda hard to hog the single lane road with that kind of mileage, although 30 mph average is not bad... since mine is much lower at 20 mph and not even close to your scores.
Aether glider 07-28-2008, 07:44 PM thats like a 6 gallon 1st pip.! I have to try the two 2X4 approach I just used a single 2X4.
sandman 07-28-2008, 07:58 PM WOW I really stuffed the tank.
Don't mean to change subject but I thought one could do a lot of damage by over filling ..Good luck guys you all are posting some great numbers..Everytime I try and P&G I have someone get behind me and start tailgating me and I have to speed up..:(
UPDATE: 88.8 mpg with over 155 miles into the tank. Ten pips and still only the first tick winking.
you guys are so lucky to be driving around areas that don't know what the middle finger is :)Just the opposite. They are more aggressive, not less. This actually works out since I always accelerate from 0-10 mph pretty slowly to avoid low speed lug. They'll do their bump and grind for about 10 feet before they loose patience then lay rubber on the pass. I've come to terms that anything short of 0-60 in 10 seconds will piss them off, so if they are gonna get mad and pass, best to do it sooner rather than later. Most of the people on my commute are fine, but statistics dictate that one in every 50 drivers is a born A55 hole.
And yes... it took 6 months to find a 4 lane access all the way to my office that burned less gas than the two lane route.Don't mean to change subject but I thought one could do a lot of damage by over fillingYep... You can do a lot of damage hanging a mirror on dry-wall too. Point is to know what your doing before you do it. The EVAP canister is fairly sturdy and can light the light if it really gets upset. You can pop the tank if you really try. This would entail filling the tank when it's about -20 degF outside then rushing it over to a body shop for a fresh coat of paint. When they bake the paint the fuel in the bladder would expand enough to pop (assuming you got 13 gallons in cold).
Everything is dangerous if done poorly, most dangerous things can be done safely. Just a matter of research.
11011011
koreberg 07-29-2008, 03:16 AM Didn't know you could damage the tank overfilling. I've always packed my tank like that. Figured it wasn't full until more fuel would not go down.
Right Lane Cruiser 07-29-2008, 06:26 AM Koreberg, that only applies to the bladder the Prius is equipped with. As far as I know, no other car is available with such a device. Everything else has a rigid tank -- which you cannot damage by "overfilling."
You're safe. :)
Aether glider 07-29-2008, 09:19 AM I think driving the car around all those speeders is more dangerous than stuffing your tank. :)
201.1 miles deep at 89.6 mpg
1101 might be possible but dang difficult (but fits my sig nicely)
11011011
bestmapman 07-30-2008, 05:22 AM Came in last night at 84.4 and 402 miles. Lost the first PIP at 392.
bestmapman 07-30-2008, 08:01 PM Got home tonight with 84.9 and 517 miles. Half way there. Lost the second pip at 451 miles. Or at least this is when I noticed it was missing.

shifty35 07-31-2008, 12:10 PM Tank average still rising past 90, very nice... I'm working my own KiloTank in the Insight, right at 86.5 mpg / 250 mi right now.
Strange as it sounds, I'll bet a Prius could do better on my commute than the Insight...
But I may have a Prius in the stable as well soon, so we'll see. ;)
whtdvl 07-31-2008, 01:19 PM all this talk about 1000+ mile tanks makes me want a hybrid :)
bestmapman 08-01-2008, 09:45 PM Well past the halfway point now. 85.0 MPG at 604 miles.
I also installed a complete lower grill block.
Here are some pics.

Wow! That is the coolest grill block I've ever seen. Got any tips on how to make one, or is it pre-fab?
On the bad news, I think that my kilo tank might not fall till September. I'm getting a car from Toyota to review and I'll need to drive it on my commutes for about 2 to 3 weeks.
Argghh!!
11011011
bestmapman 08-02-2008, 09:53 PM I got the grill block from hybrid effects. It cost about $150.
Current at 84.1 at 743 miles. Showing 4 PIPs.
bestmapman 08-03-2008, 10:09 PM Almost there. 84.0 MPG at 872 miles. When I got in today, I lost the 7th PIP almost immediately after start. Then the next PIP fell within 25 miles. Go figure. When I went to shut down, I noticed another PIP had fallen. They are dropping like flies.
I currently have 128 miles to go and am showing 1 solid PIP.

I found to float (or whatever it is that measures the tank) can stick. Surprised the h3ll out of me when I was on my Texas Tour and I went from XGauge 30% of tank to 15% of tank in under 100 miles. bestmapman 08-04-2008, 08:14 PM Finished.
84.4 MPG at 1003 miles.
I probably could have gone a few more miles, but why chance it and I was right at a gas station. The last PIP started to flash at 912 miles. I am going to write up a lessons learned thread in a few days. Tomorrow I am off to Toledo to wrap up a project.
Here is the last PIC.

Aether glider 08-05-2008, 10:12 PM with AC right?
Amazing. Keep pushing the prius FE envelope!
with AC right?
Amazing. Keep pushing the prius FE envelope!Yep. Within the rules I outlined. With the storms rolling through the temps have dropped to the low 80's. I get out of AC cuz of rule number 4. I've also had a few errands that I'm running at night so I cut the AC cuz of rule number 1. But driving at night gives me the draw of the headlights which is still substantial enough that I have to adjust the driving to account for the fast SoC fall. Not as bad as running with AC, but still fast.
When recording PIPs and Ticks (prius-speak) I'll record the moment of first occurrence.

bestmapman 08-08-2008, 08:50 PM Thanks, Be sure to come to the next meetup on the 23rd of this month.

I'm workingon it. I should post it in a few days.
554.2 miles @ 90.1 mpg.
18 ticks down, 22 ticks remaining.
4 pips down, 6 pips remaining.
I'm afraid I'll have to shelf this for a few weeks while I work on another car project, but I should pick this up where I left off in October.
Stay tuned.

Stay tuned.OK... back in the saddle. Man this is taking a site longer than I expected. Updated my stats with the September numbers since I've taken my Prius out of storage. The long hibernation and hurricane bit the numbers hard. No timing lights since they are all out.___Day___|___Tank MPG___|___Tank Miles___|___Fuel Left___|___PIPs___|___Ticks___
