I have been driving my 97 Miata for the last month or so. I have improved quite a bit from where I was. The first tank in my logs was typical before I started hypermiling it. Since then I have seen 1 tank at 33+ mpg. On the last tank I did the NORPAC solo 2 divisionals in the car and ended the tank at 30.5 mpg.

During this last tank trying to get my average back up above 30. I learned there are lots of places in my area to get great FE, in one direction... mostly to my house.

From my grandparents I have hit 43mpg average over about 20 miles. From a friends house, mostly high way the night I fueled up I hit 49 with some serious P&G(60-45-60...)
to those places I have seen as high as 37mpg or so.

So if I have the time I think I could get a 35-40 or higher mpg tank. In town traffic is what slowed me down on the last tank. I finished my summer class and now switched my work schedule to 9am-6pm. Traffic is a bit nicer at those times.

All in all I have learned much in having to drive the Miata and learning to keep my foot out of the gas peddle.

believe me I know. but going from an average of 23mpg to 33+mpg is a nice helper to my wallet. and I still auto cross on the weekends. just no races for a few weeks.

Great job!
Are these results from a scanguage?

It really is no fun at all in a miata. All I really get to have fun on my commute are onramps and oframps. Everything else is straight highway and stop lights/signs.

the segments are from a calibrated scangauge. as for fun, autocrossing makes it worth wile to have the car. definitely a mpg killer though.

Fortunately, autoX is only a few minutes of total WOT for the day, plus another several minutes to a half-hour of idling (depending on if you shut down on grid or not).

Miata, huh? Grrr.... "Those darned pesky Miatae!!" I gotta figure out how to slow you guys down, your cars regularly beat up on both of mine in CSP!!! ;)
