bestmapman 07-11-2008, 11:26 PM Nice pics. What type of snake is that.
BailOut 07-12-2008, 12:18 AM Looks like a great trip. :)
Is that river clean enough to eat the fish you catch?
MT bucket 07-12-2008, 05:05 AM it is a water snake I think.
yes I do eat somefish from the Mississippi, the water quality has got much better in the last 20 years! :)
sailordave 07-12-2008, 06:36 AM Wouldn't want to eat anything out of the mississippi south of St Louis. Those factories and farm runoffs may have improved but they don't call southern sections of the Mississippi "Cancer Alley" for nothing.
laurieaw 07-12-2008, 10:51 AM very nice shots, mike. we don't get to see a lot from that perspective. and nice one of the new bridge coming together.
i think because we are so close to the headwaters, there is less pollution up here than farther downstream. i cross the river twice a day on my commute, and it runs right through st. cloud.
Aether glider 07-12-2008, 12:34 PM Nice pics. What type of snake is that.
Its a banded water snake. Its not venomous because its head is the same diameter as its body.

Yeah I hear ya! up here they are ok though, a little PCBs and Mercury, but then is anything absolutly safe to eat these days?

Thanks! Yeah that is the first time I have been in that section. definitely more interesting in the boat, I miss alot when just passing over the bridges. I can't wait til they get the big bridge done, hopefully it will take alot of traffic away from my favorite secondary streets ! :)

Thanks for the ID! I knew it was safe to handle since we only have 2 kinds of venomous snakes in MN and they are both rattlers. It was alot more mellow that the tyipcal watersnake which tends to bite and show alot of aggression by puffing up and hissing, or as the crocodile hunter would say, quite grumpy mate! ;)
jcp123 07-20-2008, 05:53 PM Beautiful :D but much smaller than I'm used to seeing it down here (I've only seen it in St. Louis and Vicksburg, MS)
MT bucket 07-25-2008, 09:53 PM I have been up to the northern most part where you can step across on a few big stones!

Shiba3420 07-28-2008, 08:46 AM Careful with any snake that can penetrate the skin. If they bite you, you might regret it. Even without venom, their mouths can contain some very nasty bacteria which can cause a horrible infection. Fortunatly I only know this 2nd (cousin) and 3rd (patients of a doctor friend) hand. Apparently its not unusual to loose a quarter to silver-dollar sized chunk of flesh either from the skin dying of the infeciton or having to be removed due to the infection. Not sure why they are so nasty.
MT bucket 07-28-2008, 05:38 PM :D Yikes! I didn't know that! I had him by the tail, and if it even hinted agressive behavior I would have dropped it in the river!
