I was a little bummed toward the end of my tank because I had only done 350 miles or so and it looked like it was time to fill up. But then I was excited to see I only put 8.9 gallons in! So my first tank was 357.5 miles and 8.936 gallons - 40mpg! Sweet! Way better than I thought I would get, and way better than the mid/high 20s I was getting. I really owe all on you a big thanks for all the info and support here!

My info -
2005 Kia Rio, Auto, 4 spd
Rated 21/29 @ fueleconomy.gov (2008 EPA)
Commute 50 (25+25) miles/day - 40ish of that is highway - 45 min to work, 1 hour home avg
Some P&G, DWL, DWB, as much NICE-on as possible, FAS (but only at max 25 mph), shut off at lights. Obviously with so much implemented I can't tell what was most effective. Oh and now I want a scanguage more than ever.

Thanks all!

Christian H.

that's great to hear!!! that's some amazing improvement! seems like i have to kick it up a notch...

o btw, you should actually use the 07 and earlier epa to give the correct hypermile status ;)

great job tho!

I was wondering which rating to use... I just looked up the old EPA and it is 24/31. I will be very happy if I can continue getting this or better.

edit - Next goal is 43.5 mpg (500 mile tank) :)

Chansen,

I have a 2003 Kia Rio. (Don't you love the cupholders?)

Last tank, I got 49 mpg and 47 on the tank before. The last tank was completely in the city. With interstate driving I get less.

With your commute, a scan gauge will be very helpful. I find the optimum speed on the interstate changes a lot depending on altitude, wind and temperature. Sometimes it's 67, sometimes it's 55. It seems the higher speed is with a tailwind with higher temperatures and the lower speed is the reverse.

I've found Shell gasoline gets better gas mileage than other brands.

With the length of your commute, it might pay to find a station that is near the highest elevation on your route. Then you won't have to lug a full tank up the hill one time. Every little bit helps.

Great job, keep it up!

It's amazing how quickly one can jump 10+mpg if they rethink the way they drive

Actually my favorite thing is the carpeted floor-mats :) Now that is luxury!

I don't think I was a true "speeder" - well maybe, I would go as fast as the left lane would allow. My commute was typically in the high 60s or low 70s when traffic actually decides to flow. But what is worse is that it was usually 50mph - 15mph (hard acceleration - hard brake). I wish I knew how many mpgs I was getting before starting this. I'm guessing mid 20s.

I really want the sgii now and yes, I am a believer now and I am hopelessly hooked.

Oh, is there going to be another 3 month challenge right after the current one ends?
