View Full Version : Official CleanMPG Bumper Stickers
kmactavi 07-09-2008, 02:13 PM CleanMPG.com Bumper Stickers
There have been many threads in the past discussing the availability of CleanMPG bumper stickers, so it's about time we got our act together and come up with a few solid designs.
Laurie, Queen of Photoshop has offered to design the bumper stickers if we come up with the slogans/ideas. We will have one plain bumper sticker with the CleanMPG.com logo on it, as well as a few that will be decided with a Poll.
Post your ideas, or ideas you've seen on other threads, we'll have a vote, and then put Laurie to work. If anyone else is handy with graphics, the logo is in TIF format in a ZIP folder in the files section (link on the left).
We will have a few guidelines.
1. The bumper sticker must include a reference to CleanMPG.com, even if it's in small font.
2. The design must not be offensive.
If there is enough interest, we could consider getting a bulk order of static window stickers with transparent backgrounds, but a minimum order of 125 is required. Msirach has called into question the quality of CafePress' stickers.

laurieaw 07-09-2008, 02:22 PM actually, the logo is in a tif format, but i will put together the designs in illustrator. it works much better for text, and the logo can be imbedded in the artwork......
standard size is 4x10, i believe.
msirach 07-09-2008, 02:23 PM How big is the Cafe Press sticker for $2.99? I had a local shop make an 18" static for the back of the Prius when I went to the WFEC. I have a couple Cafe Press items and the quality wasn't the best.
The CafePress is on the left. I spec'd the dimensions on the static. I am going to have some smaller ones made for my other cars.

OK MSIRACH, how did you get that cleanmpg bumber sticker??
msirach 07-09-2008, 02:30 PM I had a local shop make it.
ikea4532 07-09-2008, 02:34 PM very well i will try that here in the near future.
dare2be 07-09-2008, 02:36 PM I'll go ahead and reiterate mine from another thread. This doesn't follow the guidelines per se, but my idea is to have a way for fellow hypermilers to identify each other on the road without necessarily tipping us off to the AAA lovers. :)
One way would be using one of those black and white oval stickers/decals with initials in them, commonly used for different beaches (MB = Myrtle Beach, OBX = Outer Banks, etc.)
I created a quick example here:
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/showphoto.php/photo/7472/cat/500/ppuser/6350
kmactavi 07-09-2008, 02:37 PM Msirach, how much was the static? Was there a tooling fee? Would there be a discount for bulk?

So You Don't Have To
MaxxMPG 07-09-2008, 03:32 PM Other thought I had - magnetic signs are available as well as bumper stickers. The site http://www.makesigns.com/Magnets_TemplateCategories.aspx has an option for a 6x24 inch tailgate sign, and I was considering something along the lines of the suggestion I had above, along with the CleanMPG logo, and having a few made up for my cars.
Maybe if the graphics scale well, and are available in the two different aspect ratios, an option can include bumper sticker, window header graphic, or magnetic sign. I like the magnetic sign idea because you can stick it on whatever you're driving that day. One gotcha on the idea is that more vehicles today have plastic or aluminum tailgate/trunk panels, but hey, that's why they invented the nail gun. :D
kmactavi 07-09-2008, 06:09 PM Maxx: You should be able to stick the statics to whatever you're driving that day - if your car is clean. (We just need to find a good source) :D How much are the magnetic signs?
The graphics should scale pretty well, the originals are pretty large. I think that two sizes would be a good idea as well. By aspect ratio, do you mean size? Or to account for a sloped windshield?

Kirk
The website I found charges around US$40 for a 6x24" sign. I was kicking around the idea of getting a few so I can give them out to my family members who are also hypermiling. The more CleanMPG publicity, the more drivers we will (hopefully) have in our camp.
I used the term "aspect ratio" as borrowed from our changing television broadcast standard, but I'm not sure if they use a different term in the graphics industry. I think Laurie said a standard sticker is 4x10 inches, or "width = 2.5 x height", or 2.5:1. But the magnet stickers for tailgates are 6x24", or 4:1, so they're the "widescreen version", to to speak. For the upper surface of car windshields (front or rear), I'd guess they'd have to be the same 6" (if not less) in height, but the width could be 42 to 48 inches. For these different shapes, the text and logo could be centered, or could be offset to one side to make room for additional text.
Considering the cost of such a sign, I'd just want to be sure I remembered to remove it and stash it in the hatch when parking it anywhere, since anyone could steal it. Or worse, an FSP driver could become enraged and deface it.

Ok, I wasn't sure if that was what you meant or not. Laurie should not have a problem with that, although I probably shouldn't speak for her.

laurieaw 07-10-2008, 07:44 AM i am thinking that we have a lot of ideas and sizes floating around, but we may be limited in what we can get without it turning in a special order. i know that we used to have the european oval stickers with different mileages on them.....50MPG, 55MPG, 60MPG, etc. i don't know where they were selling or where they went.
wayne?
msirach 07-10-2008, 07:58 AM They were from the Cafe Press store. It left with Tom.
kmactavi 07-10-2008, 08:02 AM Apparently they were at CafePress as well, they're not anymore.
http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5164
Sizes may be an issue, but if someone wants one that is different from the standard size we have picked out, we'll just give them the image and they can send it in to whatever supplier they want. The nice thing about CafePress is that it's easy to put together a large number of stickers without extra cost. The one product I might suggest to Wayne that the site should invest in is putting in an order for transparent-backed (preferably static) versions of the plain logo design. Other than that, all we have to do is post the designs on CafePress. I will list alternative suppliers with no minimum orders and setup fees as I find them.
Laurie, do you want to come up with a general design for the slogan ideas? All that will change is the text on each one.

ok, the top one has the sticker i got for mine. so perhaps we can just set up cafepress for our stuff, too. i will put some ideas together......are we going to narrow the choice of slogans?
i've been looking on some of the other sites, and they seem to have the long ones at 11x3. i think 4x10 is the size of the blanks i have at home......probably doesn't matter if we get enough orders.
kmactavi 07-10-2008, 08:54 AM Updated Suppliers, all but one have no minimum orders, no setup fees.
edit: Thanks for the links, 99metro.
Laurie: a number of the suppliers I found have flexible sizes, take a look. We will narrow down the slogans, I'm thinking that we'll leave the thread open for a few more days before starting a poll. Of course, you can provide a template and they could add they're own text if they want something different from the slogans that get selected. I'm thinking we'll do the CleanMPG.com logo in black and white, as well as the top 2 or 3 slogans on the same background. How does that sound?

99metro 07-10-2008, 09:37 AM Customize your own at www.zazzle.com
I just made this one:
http://www.geocities.com/leasia/Please_pass.JPG
kmactavi 07-10-2008, 09:58 AM 99metro, the one you made did not post. Most of the vendors I listed are 'customize your own', so you will be able to modify the designs Laurie comes up with if you so desire. Wayne might buy bulk and sell them through the site, which could reduce the price/support the site financially.

ikea4532 07-10-2008, 10:14 AM Hey i would be more than happy to submit for this cause, if we need to get this thing going in the right direction, I could give to get this site able to sell these bumber stickers. than say they put the sale price at like $5 a pop and it actually costs $2.50 to make, that will bring in $2.50 to keep this thing running, and say we sell 500 stickers, boom an instant $1,250 for the site/cause.
Triple AAA what? i can not hear them anymore.

Damionk 07-10-2008, 11:15 AM OK, this might be a little off-topic but I think it's along the same lines.

Completely understandable. I wouldn't have expected anything less than something worthy to sell. After all, we're portraying ourselves in a professional light, the logo items have to portray that as well :) When they're ready, you can count on 2 from me ;)

msirach 07-14-2008, 09:48 PM The new CleanMPG stickers for Hybridfest 08 look GREAT! Directions included on the back of the sticker and it says: Vinyl meant to withstand normal weather conditions for up to 7 years. Big Thanks to Paige and Amy from "Girls in the Garage".

I'm going to start the poll for the slogan bumper stickers, I'm only going to pick some of the slogans for the sake of tidiness. If you want to nominate someone else's slogan that didn't get picked, just post.
Kirk
kmactavi 07-16-2008, 07:25 AM Poll is now open. I could only pick 10, so I chose the most unique slogans, and the ones that I thought would be the most popular. If yours wasn't chosen, it doesn't mean you can't make it, I'll ask Laurie to make the template available, and you can add whatever slogan you want.
I'll have Laurie make up one or two templates and add the most popular slogans to them. Vote away!
Kirk
laurieaw 07-16-2008, 09:11 AM sample.......very plain, feel free to suggest other ideas.....we are somewhat limited with the length of the cleanmpg logo as to where and how it will fit on the sticker. it also needs to be quickly readable, since most people will probably go by so fast they won't read it easily :)

MikeN 07-28-2008, 09:58 PM Very odd... since I made a few posts in the original thread, and replied to any PM's within 2 days. You also have my phone number (and we talked on the phone quite a bit about this originally).
Sad thing is... I was about to post up some printed full color ones as an option as well... until I saw this thread. :( If there is still interest, I will take a picture and post it anyhow.
jakrolla 08-05-2008, 09:42 AM Was wondering if there is any updates on the stickers.... I need it more than ever, been tailgated too much lately, I am sure most people here experienced the same :D
Hi Jakrolla:
___The decal ones are big and I have mailed myself two now. One was damaged so I am trying to figure out a way to get them across the USPS system intact :(

Damionk 08-05-2008, 11:19 AM Hi Jakrolla:
___The decal ones are big and I have mailed myself two now. One was damaged so I am trying to figure out a way to get them across the USPS system intact :(

An idea that might help with the shipping is the postal service has a flat rate box. If you use that it won't get a chance to be smashed or torn. I think it costs around $5 but it may be cheaper than continually sending new decals to everyone. UPS also has a flat rate envelope that can be used for the decals. You just put the weight as letter and UPS has a small sort that they use for smaller packages to help prevent damage. I am not sure the price on that off the top of my head though. FedEx and DHL I have no idea what there policy is for that kind of stuff.
How about putting high density paper on either side of the decal?
It shouldn't effect the weight that much and the decals should be safe.
Hi Damionk:
___I am looking for a no box method to ship the decals. Just to darn much $’s and hassle for everyone including myself.
___Kurz, it is their size that is the problem, not the scrape. They have to rolled over to fit a std. envelope and some of the letters in the crease of the decal became dislodged. I am working on a solution.
___I am going to send one out to a lucky ScanGauge-II purchaser this week given the larger packages I use for those who want pre-programming and immediate shipment. We will see how that turns out?
___Good Luck

WriConsult 08-05-2008, 03:06 PM I like the "all those in favor" sticker and might even buy one, but my favorite is still the one on my car, no longer in print: "try ECO driving, not EGO driving."
MikeN 08-06-2008, 09:39 AM Here's the one I did for Wayne...

WriConsult: Could definately do that one.
Skwyre7 08-06-2008, 01:06 PM Wayne,
I just "donated" $9.95 through my PayPal account. I'm out of town until next week, but I would gladly be the "receiver of a bumper sticker in the new larger shipping container." Unfortunately, I won't be able to give you any feedback until Monday or Tuesday. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions/comments, or post here for all to see (or both).
Note: I'm on vacation, so I'm not logging on as often as normal.
msirach 08-06-2008, 10:42 PM This is the size of the sticker on a HCHII. I placed it over the center brake light since my 15 yr. old daughter is starting her practice driving and I didn't want anything to obstruct the rear window.

jakrolla 08-08-2008, 10:34 AM Hi Wayne:
Not to ignore your generous offer by any means, but I would really like to have the one with the slogan and CleanMPG logo on it since I am looking to put only a sticker on the back of my car.
The one that Laurie did is clean and simple, I think. We just need to agree upon one slogan.
How about suggesting a deadline to vote for our slogan, then proceed to the sticker production?
Gary
Hi All:
___I have a few of each of the general stickers and have a way to ship them without being destroyed. I think ;)
___The decal on Mike’s and Manuel’s Prius and HCH-II are ready to go but I will not setup a store like page until I see them in a few more peoples hands after shipping through the “system.”
http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/591/HCH_crop.JPG
___The bumper stickers are no less expensive than the large CleanMPG decal unfortunately.

___To those in the poll question, please give me your addresses and I will send you your own sticker free of charge. You are also the guinea pig(s) and I will get them out today and tomorrow.

Hi Mike O., Bob H. and Laurie:
___Your decals are in the mail! I am trying a more robust packaging solution. A 9x12” clasp enveloped with the stickers inside (laid flat) with heavy bond paper folded around them and all inside the envelope folded which is itself folded over on itself and taped. Please let me know if they arrive intact as they should :)
___Mike, I would like 100 of the clear decals we are used to seeing and possibly 100 of the white background logo types depending on costs and such? PM me and I will call you again.

I guess the availability of these depends on Wayne's ability to ship stickers. Alternatively they could be purchased through one of the online vendors, and we could suggest a $2 donation to CleanMPG with the link to the vendor.

Project01SC2 08-11-2008, 04:55 PM Hi Wayne,
Got my decal today and it was creased. It went across the "anM". Maybe you could put it in between a folded piece of cardboard like what comes with smaller stacks of graph paper or put it with a piece of corrigated cardboard. I heating the decal slightly to hopefully get the crease out. Right now I have the decal sitting under a board, so when it cools down we will just have to see how it looks.
Bob
Hi Bob:
___Let me know if it can be straightened out and if not, I will send out another with a cardboard sandwich in the morning.

diamondlarry 08-11-2008, 06:28 PM I've somehow missed this thread.:o Lyekka made me a sticker quite awhile ago that reads: Driving Slow To Save $$$. "If I'm Driving To Slow For You, Please Pass." It's in the same type of script as the CleanMPG.com logo. I just need to find an easy way to get my old sticker off. Anyone have any ideas?
Project01SC2 08-11-2008, 06:30 PM It should be fine, I ran a air drier on low over it (so it doesn't burn the plastic) and put a small piece of lexan and a board over it. That got out 90% of it and the rest came out when I applied it. Thanks again Wayne.

I would say the same way I take emblems and tags off. Hair drier or heat gun on low and use a plastic razor blade. Afterwards I generally use a mild buffing compound or polishing wax to get the light scuffs off. You can get plastic razor blades from body shops and most places that sell mixed automotive paint. Otherwise they do make an adhesive remover that is safe for clearcoats, but it is rather messy.

Mine came in the mail. And the mail-man didn't even jam it into my box like he usually tries to do so it wasn't damaged in the least. :)
Before I make myself look like a fool--does the one in the window go on the outside or the inside of the car?

Skwyre7 08-12-2008, 02:17 PM I haven't picked up my mail from the Post Office yet. I'll try to swing by there on my way home this afternoon.
Skwyre7 08-13-2008, 06:42 AM I got the decal yesterday. No bends, creases, or wrinkles. And now I have Wayne's address, so I can drop by unannounced. ;)

laurieaw 08-13-2008, 08:39 AM mine came the other day, no problems. of course, i have a huge rural mailbox you could almost put the car in. i haven't had time to put it on the car yet, but will send a photo when i do.
i did get a different bumper sticker than i expected, however.
I definately want to get the Clean MPG.com sticker. I am thinking about making another one that says
YES! As a Matter of Fact... I am HYPERMILING or Its called Hypermiling
Damionk 08-15-2008, 09:36 PM I know it's kind of late for bumper sticker submissions, but I thought of this one at work and hopefully it will catch on enough. Maybe Wayne will be nice enough to include it in the options. Anyways, my idea is "What's Your MPG?" or "What's Your EPA?". Like a play on those, "What's your sign?" pick up lines.
Damionk 08-28-2008, 12:07 PM Although it wouldn't be politically correct and probably offensive. How about...
"Get closer, I like you up my a$$."
Sorry for offending.
Hi Abcdpeterson:
___Your CleanMPG and Research Vehicle decals are in the mail! Let me know when and how they arrive. Meaning good condition or not as I stepped up the packaging a bit ;)

PookieSoup 08-31-2008, 07:15 PM damionk,
That's hilarious. I apparently need one. I've been rear ended twice! Other cars just can't stay off my rear. My poor CRV, that thing has gone through so much.
YarSwiss 09-11-2008, 08:42 PM This would probably be too long to be a bumper sticker, but it would be a great mantra. This is a "translation" of the infamous French routine from Monty Python and the Holy Grail:
"You don't frighten us, you silly fuel sucking pig. Go and burn your oil. I blow my nose on you, so-called macho-car, you and your silly Land-Barges."
Original version: You don't frighten us, English pig-dog! Go and boil your bottoms, son of a silly person. I blow my nose on you, so-called Arthur-king, you and your silly English kiniggets.
visionseeming 09-15-2008, 10:45 AM Although it wouldn't be politically correct and probably offensive. How about...
"Get closer, I like you up my a$$."
Sorry for offending.
That reminds me of a t-shirt I once saw that I thought would be a great bumper sticker:
"If you are going to ride my a**, at least pull my hair!"
LOL
YarSwiss 09-30-2008, 09:57 PM Just thought of a great bumper sticker:
"If you are driving faster than me, you are wasting gas"
Lord Biron 10-01-2008, 12:47 PM United Nuclear has a great one:
Hydgrogen Powered Vehicle (then the HAZMAT clarification symbol, and explosive symbol)
Please pass. Follow at own Risk.
Yamus 11-07-2008, 11:42 AM I created my own temporary bumper sticker until I get the real ones in:
"55 MPH = 65 MPG"
This is the MPG I get on my 55 mile commute to work and back.
08' Prius II
WriConsult 11-07-2008, 01:42 PM DamionK and visionseeming, I've got an even better idea along the same lines, but I think I'd better not post it publicly.
PookieSoup, I've been rear-ended twice (injured both times) too, so I'm pretty sensitive to this topic. I have a pretty low tolerance for tailgating and don't let it go on for long before I pull out all the stops trying to shake the 'gater.

Yamus 11-13-2008, 10:32 PM Question for Wayne. Are you still selling Cleanmpg.com decals and stickers? We need them pretty bad as people here in western North Carolina have no idea what hypermiling is and so therefore they get pissed off rather easily when they come up on anyone going slower than 10 over the speed limit.
Thanks.
