Some of you may know me from other forums on the web. I found this forum recently and am amazed by the mileage that you are able to achieve with your cars.

I am the proud owner of a 1987 Ford Escort EXP Sport Coupe. It is often mistaken for a 5.0 Mustang. I like the fact that it looks mean but is able to return 40+ mpg with a tailwind at 70 mph. It has a 1.9L HO engine paired with a 5-speed transmission. It is begging for a rear sway bar to handle the way that I would like it to but it is fairly good in that department as well.

I recently used some mild hypermiling techniques and was amazed at the results. I thought my gas gauge was broken. My car got 59.2 MPG!

How's this for an economy car? :D

Welcome to CleanMPG! Its nice to have more drivers with older Domestic cars pulling great numbers out of them to show the rest of the world that Hypermiling is for everyone no matter what car you have.

I don't see many cars like your out on the road, but from what you describe, it sounds like a great combination of power, economy, and aesthetics.

I hope you've read the article "Beating the EPA...." http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510 it is a great starting point and gives you ideas of what's possible in any car.

Keep us updated with your results as you progress!

Thanks for the welcome. The thing about older cars that most people forget is that they usually weigh a lot less than newer ones in the same category. I never see another EXP on the road and seldom see a Fiero (www.expiowa.homestead.com/87Fiero.html) in the condition that mine is in.

My EXP weighs just over 2,400 lbs. My Fiero weighs just 2,740. It gets 30mpg at 70 mph. Low weight can equal good mileage and done properly excellent handling.

The trade off for this low weight is no ABS, traction control, airbags, other gadgets that you find on newer cars and on the EXP I am likely giving away some crash protection. I hope that I never find that one out. I am planning an engine swap in the Fiero that will more than double the power of the car and increase the mileage by 5 mpg.
