Hi everyone! I've been lurking here for a few weeks and figured that I spend enough time here that I should register and actually become a contributing member.

I drive a 2000 Saturn SL1, and after practicing a few of the techniques that you guys talk about, I regularly get 35 mpg, but I'm looking to improve as much as possible! One of the recent changes that I've made is in my commute. I live in north Jersey (Morristown area) and work in central Jersey (New Brunswick area). I used to take I-287 the whole way, which made it difficult to keep my speed down without someone trying to crawl into my trunk! So I just (2 days ago) started taking 202 south. The speed limit is only 50 at most and it's dead in the mornings. If I can get the timing of the lights down, I don't think it'll take any longer that my old route did.

Thanks to everyone for builing a great community here!

Quick note on my choice of screen name: I'm an analytical chemist at a fragrance company and a perfumer in training, hence the name. I smell for a living (both as a verb and an adjective)!

Hello and welcome to the club.

You should start by knowing your car’s EPA rating located at FuelEconomy.gov (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm) and make sure to read the article “Beating the EPA” (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510).

Make sure you air your tires up to the maximum pressure indicated on the tire’s sidewall.

Also, consider purchasing a ScanGaugeII (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=103426). It is an invaluable source of information and will quickly pay for itself in fuel savings.

However, please be careful as hypermiling is addictive. :)

Yeah, I forgot to say that I already juiced my tires to 44/44 psi (after reading this website!) and dumped all the crap out of my trunk. I'm looking into a ScanGuageII, just need to have the $150 to drop on it. Thanks!

I also have a quick question that someone might have an answer to. I just started FAS about 2 days ago and I'm getting the hang of it, but I had something happen twice that I can't figure out. I was rolling downhill, popped it into neutral and killed the engine (needles all dropped to zero), then keyed back to "on". I definitely didn't start the ICE again, yet. I get to the bottom of the hill and then realize that my tach isn't zero, its up around 800 or whatever, and the ICE is running. So I was basically NICE-On instead of FAS. Any ideas on how that happened? Thanks!
