View Full Version : Hypermiling Buffet - Wayne's new book
gershon 07-02-2008, 10:43 AM Wayne,
I've seen you mention the buffet a lot of times. I think it's time for a book. Books can be published quite easiy at www.instantpublisher.com for about $7.00 a copy. I think you could sell a lot here.
I'll leave it to your imagination for the chapters, but with a twist of irony, I'd put "Techniques mentioned by AAA" in big print someplace on the cover.
Can't wait to order a copy. Perhaps it could be written on the forum. You could mention a topic like "Potential parking" and people could respond with pictures, etc.
Might be fun.

Wouldn't mind reading the chapter on "Road Courtesy" in achieving the hypermilage.
On the last cross country trip I've discovered it is possible to "hypermile" (the practise of extending fuel-milage) without disrupting traffic even once. Pulling over with the 4 ways on well in advance is apparently legal in every Province or State in North America.
"Hypermiling" will gain the respect of other motorists when performed in a fashion where no-one around us is unnecessarily/negatively affected with our process and presence.

and i will respect other motorists when they slow down and stop their aggressive driving styles.
Hi Laurieaw,
On the first trip in 05 it was Canadian truckers who furthered my knowledge on this caution (moving out of the way with the emergency flashers going is a good thing)
Surprisingly most were supportive but insisted fourway flashers are helpful. I guess that would also work for speeders if we can manage to find them in the rearview quick enough to move over to safety. After all (as you've pointed out) they are a danger.
Being light, I can coax the old 89hp Saturn to rapidly accelerate prematurely on occassion (in the name of safety) to prevent the gap in my 'rearview' narrowing too quickly for comfort by one of these "aggressives".
But truckers must have been onto this growing fad for a while. If you think about it, they are the most affected ... and they see this stuff on the road all the time. Soon I discovered that they moved over to pass me way in advance nearly every time when my fourways were visible ahead to warn of my apparent intent to move over to stop, ... and that became the interesting part of 'FASing' for milage-extension ("hypermiling").... as truckers began to honk in apppreciation.
hobbit 07-04-2008, 09:33 AM Four-ways are useful in other contexts, too, because nobody ever
considers that someone might be going slow in the process of
simply trying to *find* something. Just yesterday I was on a
fairly busy road [2 lanes each way] trying to find a building
number, which are often small and half-hidden, and the only way
I could do it was to tool along at 25 mph with the flashers on
so I had enough time to look aside at the buildings and locate
the numbers before they were out of sight.
.
That definitely wasn't anything like HM, it was simply being
lost. And yet plenty of people went around in a really irritated
fashion -- like THEY were never in a strange neighborhood either,
my butt.

Tochatihu 07-04-2008, 11:10 PM If you want to go 'mainstream' I can refer you to a publishing agent (friend). You hafta write a book proposal and a sample section. Wayne's credentials, and the current media tupple would provide the rest of the initial requirements.
I happen to like the "For Dummies" series. It is getting quite long, and finally there may be only one left unwritten.
Wait for it...
"Ventriloquism For Dummies"

Send me the Amazon link.....
jimepting 07-05-2008, 10:17 AM It would certainly be an interesting and timely book. But it would require a bunch of research if it were to offer sound NATIONWIDE advice. Some techniques we use such as fas'ing are illegal in some states. Of course, there are many good techniques which are legal nationwide and could be explained in detail.
Perhaps a way to deal with techniques such as fas'ing would be the use of a chart simply showing which states allow the practice.
My wife is a professional editor and would be willing to offer her services as proofreader and editorial assistant. We are retired and have the time to invest.
There appears to be enough material for employing a simplified approach and to avoid encouraging illegalities for "NATIONWIDE" acceptance. Then the procedures for extending fuel milage are presented in a way that encourages drivers to a vigilance for obeying laws and maintaining safety.

phoebeisis 07-06-2008, 12:17 PM Buffet - good term , you take what you want, and leave the rest . I take adequate tire pressure , syn oil and lube , motor on P&G , shut down at redlights , no warm up , dump extra weight , keep right etc .I leave motor off moving techniques to the more adept .
Buffet is an excellent term. It makes it clear that there is plenty of choice; the site isn't a monolith , we pick and choose .

Crafting a complete version for the eager public ... is definitely going to require that kind of dedicated support.

This reminds me of a time when my wife and I stopped to change a tire for an older lady. Picture this: the woman's car was parked in the right lane of a busy, 6-lane boulevard with a completely shredded left-rear tire. I'm kneeling in the road (next to the middle lane) to change the tire while my very-pregnant wife, who was just four days away from delivering our first child, was trying to warn oncoming traffic to go around us. Despite all that, there were still idiots who angrily honked their horns at us as they drove by. I'm convinced there's something about driving a car that renders some people temporarily insane.
One thing about that incident that I'll never forget. As I walked past the woman's shredded left-rear tire to offer our help, she rolled down her window and said, "I took my car to the mechanic last week and they must have messed something up." She had no idea that her tire looked like road kill.

What about doing a community Wiki page on the subject that could be turned into a book?
lamebums 07-23-2008, 01:21 AM Although Wayne hasn't dropped in here yet I am working on my own book of hypermiling, it's in the rough drafts section albeit only half-finished so far?
I've been horridly busy so unfortunately unable to finish it but is there any incentive for me to pick it up again?
It could be the gas mileage bible. :)
