View Full Version : Kilo Tank Finally Achieved! (1,000+Miles/Tank)

I've been attempting to obtain 1,000+ miles on one tank of gas since I purchased my Insight last year. I've routinely reached 900+ miles and 980 once but never the 1,000 mile gold standard.

My travel during this tank was mostly to and from work. I live in Irving just north of the DFW Airport and work near downtonw Dallas, TX. The one-way trip ranges from 17-22 miles depending on the route. The shortest route is almost all highway but for two miles and the longest is roughly 22 miles taking side streets and an older highway that has a speed limit of 45mph. I've found my best mileage is combining the two approximately half highway and half side streets. I try to keep my speeds between 50 and 55 on the highway and 30-40 on the sidestreets.

I began a long drive with the FCD showing over 900 miles with 1 fuel bar left so I grabbed my 1 gallon gas can and hit the road. I was determined to reach the 1,000 mile mark and also estimate how long I can travel after the last fuel bar has been distinguished.

As I hit 1,010 miles the engine sputtered for the first time so I immediately killed the engine and pulled over. I avereged 91.6 mpg for the tank and covered 1,010 miles with my lifetime mpg climbing to 90.7. I added almost 1 gallon on the side of the road and travelled to the nearest gas station to add another 10.01 gallons for a grand total of approximatley 11.01 gallons.

The last fuel bar dissappeared around 930 miles and came back on around 950 and finally distinguished for good around 960. I travelled approximately 50 miles after the last bar finally disappeared.

On another note, I have also been attempting to reduce the amount of miles I drive per month. I filled this tank up on April 20 and it lasted until yesterday, May 20.

Update -

I am glad to report my Lifetime MPG has increased to 93.

My second kilo tank in a row covering 1069.3 miles on 10.32025 gallons for a hand calculation of 103.6MPG.

Nice work!! I'm still hoping for my first kilo tank, have to buy a 1-gallon tank of gas to take with me because I keep losing my nerve.

It's tough when it's hovering around 100mpg because any tiny mistake costs you.

Of the 135 times I have fueled up my Insight, 29 have been 1000+ mile tanks. I always fill up the tank until it's FULL, all the way, not just the first click. With your tank averages and a full tank, you should have no problems making 1000+ miles and with no need to carry a gas can with you.....Louis

Hello xzizx, that was not my Insight you saw but Delta Flyer's. He lives in Lewisville and to answer your other question - yes, I only run regular unleaded.

Hey Pale and Right Lane, thanks for helping me get the best tank ever. It was 652.2 miles @ 52.2 tank average. Crazy. This is because early in the tank you showed me how 45-60 pulse and glide was better than i was doing before (45-70). Thanks again.

Excellent! I second Andrew's response, too. :)
