Howdy! I recently found out about this great community from Dan and finally got around to joining the forums here. A ton of useful info!

I dumped my 13mpg 2001 Dodge Dakota QuadCab back in August of 2005 and took delivery of one of the first 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrids in our area. I live in a hilly region between Philadelphia and Allentown, PA so the terrain isn't what I'd call "hybrid-friendly". Still, using my own techniques with this AWD SUV, I'm hitting 31 mpg in the summer and 26 or so in the cold winters. After reading about the additional techniques here, I hope to increase my mpg, so thanks in advance for all of the great info! I'll be adding my vehicle to the Mileage Logs so you can keep me honest. We already have 45k miles on the car, but it's well maintained so my goal is for a 40+ mpg tank!

The other challenge I face here is that my wife doesn't when I "drive like a granny" as she puts it. I can always tell when she's driven the car because the reported mpg is lower then when I last left it. ;) In any case, keep up the great work here. Looks like a fun and informative community!

I am a semi-newbie here and i am getting better and better gass mileage using the techiques that wayne has set forth. Just remember if you got a lot of rolling hills (use the FAS technique & shut off your vehicle!)and stop lights (Drive like a nanny between the lights so you DWB, like RTE 611 offers. it might take you longer trip times, but in the end it will be well worth it and maybe your first 40+ tank will come sooner than you think.Take care andy happy HM ing.

Hi! I am not far from you. Nice to meet another gas conscientious person in the area :) I am actually going to Philly today. (I am about a an hour and half due north of Philly)

I am saving loads on gas with these techniques. Good luck and welcome...

Thanks for the welcome! I'm in the Harleysville / Green Lane area and don't get down to Philly much these days. I did have to run to the traffic-infested 309-area in Montgomeryville today though and I think ikia4532 is right: I'll hit 40+ on a tank sooner than I thought. Just in that short ride using some the techniques I found here, I was hitting between 40 and 60+ on most of 5 min increments of my display. Too bad the bars top out at 60mpg on the Highlander! :)

Welcome to a GREAT COMMUNITY. You should start using the Mileage Log here.
I live in Perkasie, Bucks County.

Cool. I live in Easton. I don't go to Phiily much, but I have relatives in Allentown, Perkasie, and Chalfont, so I head to those places from time to time... not much to do in Easton itself LOL

Perkasie is practically in my backyard. And if you know the Perkasie area, you know what hills I have to contend with. It's not a good sign for a "hypermiler" if the nearest major road is called "Ridge Road". It's the ridge of the highest hill in the county! Works great for me... but only in one direction. ;)

Howdy! I recently found out about this great community from Dan and finally got around to joining the forums here. A ton of useful info!Ha!... 7 degrees of separation at work. Welcome to the party glad you joined. I'm still trying to get my head around the HiHy. I think I've got the Prius and Camry pretty figured, but the HiHy is a bit of a mystery. There is some stuff you might try on the highway if you get a scangauge. There seems to be a tweek that works in Prius and Camry call SHM. Brian developed a similar realization in the Yaris and called it "Hangtime". Anyway the basic idea is to hold the throttle just past idle and accept a slow deceleration, then jack back up to a faster speed and repeat. With practice it offers a 10-15% boost to most highway numbers.
