I have about a 25 mile commute. I just bought an 2008 Civic LX sedan and am looking for some hypermiling tips.

My car: 2008 Honda Civic LX sedan. 13.2 USG tank. So far I am averaging about 33 MPG's.

My commute: 23 miles one way, 19 miles of State Hwy 28 (55mph) with 2 lights within a mile of home and one stop sign about 19 miles away. Turns into US hwy 80 (55 mph) soon to be 4 laned and 65 mph. Rural roads, somewhat hilly and 2 lane most of the way.

Looking for tips!

thanks,

Jimmy

Welcome !

1) read 'beating the EPA....' linked on the upper right hand side of this website

2) Pump up tires to max sidewall (listed on tire)

3) If your car doesn't have a iFCD, get a scanguage

4) slow down to the speed limit

5) try the easy things first - time lights, drive speed limits, and so forth

6) Then go for the middling techniques - DWL, Nice-on coasting, and some engine-off at stoplights.

7) once you feel comfortable w/ DWL and coasting, then move to the advanced techniques such as FAS.

It is all in 'beating the EPA'

Keep us posted with your progress !

Finally - keep up a mileage log (link left hand side of page) - You'll find lost of similar cars to yours and the comments section of the logs provides insight in what works for people with you model cars.

I just got an 2008 Honda Civic LX also. I love it. I have gotten as high as 40mpg and as low as 33 mpg so far. I keep trying all these techniques here. I think my next step is going to be tire pressure. I always thought it was bad to keep it high (quicker wear on tires) but I guess that is not true. My tires are at 32 right now and I'm going to look at the max psi and go up to that.

This is similar to my situation. I just got a 2008 Civic LX on the 12th of this month. I commute 21 miles each way. The roads can be rather hilly (not mountainous though), but at least I don't hit a traffic light for the first 12 miles. At 14 miles, though, I start hitting one after another.

Anyway, I estimate that I will be getting about 33 mpg (I'm still on the first tank from the dealer.), and am somewhat disappointed at that. That is no better than my old Chevy Cavalier.

I have not been shutting off the engine yet. (I can get 35 mpg on the Cavalier with this technique.) I have been doing 1250-1500 rpm at 35-45 mph. I don't go above about 1750 rpm at 55 mph, except when I can't avoid it climbing hills. (It's an automatic because I hate stop and go driving enough as it is without having to shift. I guess I should have just got a manual though.)

I expect to gain a couple of mpg when I shut off the engine at lights.

Don't know if any of this helps.

I have a 2006 EX coupe (5MT) and have gone from 29MPG to 35MPG with pumping up the tires, slowing down, coasting and turning off the car coasting upto known long lights. I think that a scanguage would help us quite a bit with these civics because of the economy version of "v-tec" the R18 engine has. Too much throttle on acceleration switches out of economy v-tec and into the preformance mode. Good luck and start logging your tanks with notes to see what works for you and what doesn't, I think that is crucial to changing your driving for efficiency.

Hello-

Speaking as a Civic owner, pump up the tires to sidewall pressure and keep the engine out of vtec-e (<3000rpm).

Good luck.

I also just bought a new Civic LX, coupe, 5 speed. I have a little over 1000 miles on it and have averaged over 36 MPG. I live in Fairbanks, Alaska. Bought the car in Anchorage, on the 360 mile trip home I got 46.28 mpg! Filled up before and after, aired up tires to about 38, and used some pretty hard core methods. After 360 miles I had more than 1/2 tank left, and used 7.44 gallons!

Drove 58 MPH, no AC (it is Alaska), coasted everywhere I could without impeding traffic much, even turned off the engine on most coasting. Since then have averaged about 34.5 around town and 12 mile commute, for an overall average of 36+.

Great little car!
