Well, I had a bit of tread left, but the tires were looking cracked in spots and realy looked like they could use refreshing.

42,000 miles on the first set.

I told the "just tires" store to put them at 60psi from the start. The guy of course looked at me like I was crazy, He told the tech and the tech's expression was like he was told to take a hammer to my car and smash the windows. The ol' "this customer is crazy" look. Of course they told me that the dealer warranty will be void so I'm like ok.

They asked if I wanted road hazzard insurance. I wonder if I bought it if they would try to wriggle out of it by saying my tires were overinflated. At any rate $25 or something for road hazzard on 4 tires costing $39.00 each seemed to be not worth it.

The total charge for 4 tires including balancing, valve steams and displosal, and tax was $253ish.

Why did I pick today to get new tires. Two reasons, I didn't like how used my original tires looked, and I'm currently taking a hit in MPG from a suspected bad EGR valve so I may as well take the hit from the tires in the same tank instead of having a few tanks that are bad.

Oh, I forgot to say one more think the store told me "over inflated tires heat up more than tires that have a little flex because the flex helps cool them at highway speeds".

That's just opposite of what I've always heard and know.

Anyway I've had good luck with my factory Dunlops. Always ran up to 51PSI and at 70,000 miles is at 4mm pretty much all the way across the bar, and will be replaced at around 75,000.

yeah i find thats the opposite of what happens to my car too... put them at 30 psi maybe they'll warm up to 35 or something...put them at 60 and they will be dead at 60 and yes I encountered at least 7 miles of stop and go traffic so i dunno.

yup all four tires :O digital gauge

Heh. I think a lot of the cracking and stuff was due to 1) the change in weather they have to bear (from -4F to 100F) and the fact I put lots of air in them at about 2 years into them and 2) the tire may have already kind of hardened as rubber tends to do. 3 1/2 years isn't too bad for a set of tires I think, but I suspect these will last much longer.

Edit: Terry, the psi did drop early morning to 55psi, which I would expect given it was 30F cooler than yesterday when I last tested. When I got to work they were up to 60psi with the temp not changing from the test at home. I guess they still warm up some. I don't know why they didn't warm up from the store to my house though. Maybe they get to a certain point and the temp stays the same.

Yeah, the temp thing does change even from sitting in my garage where there is No-Sun on them to backing the car out in the turn around and rechecking the PSI later in the day. It will be Higher. The sun Heats them up and that adds PSI to them.

I check mine on Saturday morning inside the garage and early before the heat builds up. Then I set the PSI where I want it and I know for sure then that the PSI was as Accurate as Possible.
