Improving transparency in Fuel Economy figures

Honda New Zealand is again bringing a new step towards increased transparency in the automotive market,
this time not in price but in the fuel economy and environmental performance of their cars.

In comparison to 1995 levels, Honda Motor Company has reduced fuel consumption on average by 30% and emissions by 86%. This performance is reflected in New Zealand with Honda’s performance in the EnergyWise Rally in both 2002 and 2004, and fuel efficiency improvements seen in new models such as the new Civic sedan.

In New Zealand the concern and focus of customers on fuel economy has been appreciated by Honda since 2003 when a local return test route between Auckland to Taupo was established. This test provides several benefits to customers; a benchmark consumption across the Honda range, a target for optimal achievable economy figure while driving at normal highway speeds in local conditions, and a comparison where the New Zealand vehicle is not tested in the Australian or European regimes.

From 1 July 2006 a decal will be placed on all Honda demonstrator cars displaying three fuel economy numbers that cover consumption as under the Australian Design Rules, Optimal Local Test (Auckland-Taupo-Auckland) and the EnergyWise Rally result from 2004 where available. The decal is specific to the model, engine capacity and transmission.

The decal also clearly states the emissions standard that each vehicle falls within.

“The environmental performance of our vehicles has been a focus for Honda for many years and we are pleased to provide more clarity for our customers in this area” said Graeme Seymour, Managing Director of Honda.
