LOS ANGELES - Motorists who drive hybrid vehicles won't have to search for loose change when they park at meters in Los Angeles, thanks to a program extended by the City Council today.

The free parking program was set to end next Friday, but today's council action extended the offer until Jan. 1, 2008.

The free meter plan was launched in October 2004 to reward drivers who purchase hybrid vehicles.

Vehicles with a "Clean Air Vehicle" decal issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles are eligible to participate. The DMV issues about 1,000 such decals statewide each month, according to a Los Angeles Transportation Department report.

Hmmph. Very nice, but the friggin city's so gerrymandered in places you can't be be sure sometimes if you're actually IN L.A. -- or Beverly Hills, West Hollywood or some other unincorporated part. So unless I'm downtown I'll just feed the meter, not risk a ticket.
