Even in warm weather, it could take at least a couple of miles for the engine to warm up, so I often do a FAS to avoid ideling at intersections. Come to think of it, maybe I'm defeating the purpose of the catalytic converter - or am I?

well they say the cat converter needs to be up to 250 degress C to be functioning properly, but at the same time idling reduces the performance of the cat because the fumes from the idling actually cools down the cat rather than contributing more heat to it.

so if your trip is extremely short, then its best to minimize fuel use as much as possible and burn the remains on a longer trip.
