Hi, I'm new to the forums! I drive a 2001 mitsubishi galant, am only 17 years old, and am trying to get as good milage as I can, without sacrificing safety too much. I average about 30 mpg on the highway and probably about 25 in the city.

Hi and welcome to the forum. First of all drive the speed limit, and check your tire pressure to max sidewall. Then read Beating the EPA - The Why’s and how to Hypermile. (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510)
That should give you a good place to start.

welcome !
Hypermiling is much safer than 'regular' driving - driving the speed limit is always safer than racing around.
Try these tips
1) Pump up tires to max sidewall (written on side on tire)
2) if your car doesn't have a iFCD get a scanguage or similar device to give you instant feedbaclk on consumption and a host of other items which will help train you to drive to save gasoline.
3) a good first step is to start learning to DWL.
