Hi All, just saying hi. I am new to the site. I got a new car recently and am very interested in hypermiling. Its the new Mazda 2, which is a 1000kg light car (1.5L engine). I drive 500km each week and so far have been able to average 6.4L/100kms (36.7MPG) in pretty nasty traffic. Government testing indicates 6.4L/100kms combined so I guess I have a bit to go to try to beat it. I am hoping when once the new engine loosens up a bit more I'll get more out of it.
Does anyone here "pulse & glide" in their conventional engine without shutting it off? I have been trying the technique with just dipping the clutch when I think that I can maintain speed without opening the throttle. Not sure it is helps at all.

Hi and welcome to the forum. This article Beating the EPA - The Why’s and how to Hypermile (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510), is a good place to start. Let the folks here know some things about your commute and driving style and don't be shy about asking questions.

Yes, you can use NICE-ON P&G in a conventional car -- though you should just shift to neutral and let the clutch pedal out. If you don't you will likely wear out the clutch throw-out bearing. Coasting with the engine on does use more fuel than with the engine off, but attempting engine off coasting is an advanced technique that should not be tried in public until you are VERY comfortable with it after a lot of practice in isolated areas.

Hi and welcome. Where are you from? Unfortunately, we do not get the Mazda 2 in North America. I hear it is a great small car.
Welcome to the site!
I want your car. :D

___100 #’s in weight loss, full complement of safety gear and even better crash test ratings? You can’t beat that and you get to drive the vehicle some of us can only dream of driving someday. That is until its younger sibling, the 2010 Ford Fiesta arrives :(
___Good Luck

I am from Australia. I didn't know you don't get the 2 in North America. It is a great little car so far, designed by the guy who did the MX5 (Miata in USA). And yes, it does well in crash testing, maximum of 5 stars in European NCAP testing.
I got the base model, mainly because of cost but also the higher spec ones are heavier, which kinda goes against the "gram strategy" that the designers employed when making this car.
And thanks for the tip about letting out the clutch in neutral, didn't think about the throw out bearing . . .
