New member here, just found this site the other day through the CNN report.
Car is a 2001 Corolla automatic (sorry it is not a manual), with 195k miles on it. It used to be a salesman's car.
I commute 25 miles each way daily, partly at highway speed, partly stop and go.
I have already been a very conservative driver, driving slower, 55 to 60, using NICE-ON and DWB, anticipating stops, and using long coasts into exit ramps. Doing this, I have become amazed at how well I have learned to judge some of the coasts so that I barely use the brakes. I have been getting about 36mpg. But now I have to recalibrate myself. After visiting this site, I pumped up the tires from 32 to 44. Now when I coast, the car just doesn't slow down and I have have to brake way more than I should at the end of the coast. I am looking forward to seeing how much my mileage goes up as I re-learn and with the lower rolling resistance. The scanguage on order should help also.

"Keep a log"....yep, I have been logging my mileage and every fill up for years. My wife thinks I'm crazy. But this kind of anal mentality should fit right in.;)

I also noticed my wipers don't hide behind the hood. They stick way out in the wind. I pulled them off and put them in the car along with a wrench to re-install if I need to. One nut each, so I is pretty easy and quick. I have found that the Rain-X wiper fluid works very well. Keeps a constant fresh coat of rain-ex on the windshield and makes wiper use almost optional. We do get pretty heavy summer rains in Florida. Just something else to keep observant for and plan ahead.

I agree with those who are saying post your log...it kind of gives you something to help you keep track of your progress...plus I found someone else who drives the same type of car that I do and some who drive cars made by the same company (Chrysler), so knowing that there is someone out there who has some idea of what I'm driving helps.

Be careful - in some states wipers are required equipment and you can get cited/fined for taking them off. Check with your state regulations. Its kinda pathetic - you can drive without bumpers, but removing wipers is a no-no...

Welcome SlowHand! Looks like you've got a good start on getting some great numbers out of your Corolla.

If we were to ever get into a 'quick draw' competition, I'll bet the spectators would find watching paint dry to be a much quicker event ;)
