View Full Version : Hypermiling Ford Excursion
doc trock 06-02-2008, 10:17 PM Hello all!
Since "snapping" about 3 weeks ago, I have radically changed my driving style. My family now has 2 hybrids and a 2003 Ford Diesel Excursion, 4wd.
Yup. You got that last part right.
We have 5 kids, and the big rig is actually quite economical when faced with all those people and luggage.
I have it chipped, intake modified, and exhaust modified...pressure at 80 in all tires.
I have driven the last 230 miles at 22.6 MPG, just by DWL, DWB, PG and going the speed limit or slower. It's going to get parked mostly, driving just a little each week and on two vacations this summer, but when I do take it out, you can bet I'll be hypermiling as best I can.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me? (no, we're not selling the truck)
lamebums 06-02-2008, 10:31 PM Hi and welcome to CleanMPG! It would be great to hear about your progress with the Excursion and improving it's mileage.
Consider this--with yourself and five kids in the vehicle, even 22 MPG is great (effectively that is 132 MPG, all passengers considered!).
Read up on the article "Beating the EPA - the Why's and How's to Hypermile"

Make sure those tires are pressed up in all your cars and you'll see the mileage rise in no time. :)
warthog1984 06-02-2008, 10:34 PM Welcome!
Yes, even Excursions can be Hypermiled.
Suggestions-
Hypermile the hybrids and use them as much as possible- ?
Tires- done
Slowdown/DWL- done
Anticipating Lights- ?
Coasting to Reds and shutting down if possible- ?
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Which powerstroke 7.3 or 6.0?
Did yours come with the tack?
trackermpg 06-02-2008, 11:30 PM Nice work on your efforts to improve your mileage with the big guy! I think it's a good thing for everyone to see that the people here are happy and willing to help all of us who want to try to do better, even those of us who don't have more than a 12V battery under the hood!
doc trock 06-04-2008, 11:43 PM Which powerstroke 7.3 or 6.0?

7.3 powerstroke. Got the tack.
The sweet spot is at about 1800 rpm. I don't think I'm going to get a scan gauge for it, because I'm driving the hybrids so much.
Coasting to lights is great in the ex...but FAS is not a good idea, IMO. Turning over that engine is hard on the starter.
It's amazing, now that I am aware of all this stuff, to think about how stupid I drive. Racing off the line to be first to the red light, then braking hard....
I took physics in college too.....yikes.

Lucky you getting the tack, why they did not put in the E , I am still trying to figure that logic......
True, FAS with the diesel and the starter,,, not a good idea when starters run the price that they do....ouch....there are a number of reasons for the strater to go south and I am not planing on giving it another reason..
Racing off the line is more of an EGO thing..... that little rice rocket that is next to you with the tunes so loud that you can hear it over ones own stero....then there is the black cloud that one leaves behind around the little rice rocket,,,:Banane09: but truely not real good for the engine or the fuel mpg...
I do the cost thing often. Just taking the foot off the diesel(gas) does wonders in opening some room between you and the person ahead. Watching the rigs up ahead does wonders as well..
One thing that I have seen with the scangauge over the last week or so is the mpg with the rpms and mph.... tomorrow I get to find out how the scangauge numbers turn out with the way I have been figuring it for the last 5 years..
And see if the Aero Turbine 4" is doing any thing for the mpg...
phoebeisis 06-05-2008, 08:41 AM What is the "tack"-some sort of 7.3 inside info?I'm always curious about large SUV mpg.
Thanks,
Charlie

Its the tachometer, usually the "tach". Some people cannot spell.
2008Mazda3i 06-05-2008, 12:33 PM Sounds like your doing great to me, best I ever did in my F150 was 19 mpg on a highway trip!! That was my pre-hypermiling days though
phoebeisis 06-05-2008, 12:47 PM warthog-thanks for the info.I would have never guessed that a $40,000 vehicle could come without a tachometer. The diesel Excursions were very expensive. They still aren't cheap-Ford folks seek them out for them better mpg(actual FE is probably close to the gasoline V-8 (5.4 I guess)now).
