View Full Version : Jetta Wagon TDI prices posted $23,590 MSRP Vooch 06-02-2008, 10:19 PM http://www.vw.com/jettasportwagen/pricelist/en/us/#/overview Right Lane Cruiser 06-03-2008, 08:04 AM That's a good bit lower than I expected! seftonm 06-04-2008, 02:07 AM Wow that is lower than I thought too, especially considering what the US Dollar has been doing vs the Euro recently. Looks like the TDI is about a $2250 upgrade over the similarly equipped SE 2.5. Vooch 06-04-2008, 09:05 PM Indeed - the TID Wagon price point is surprisingly low given the MPG. VW may have established the low price to gauge the market appetite. We'll see how it sells - people should easily get 50 MPG in this. bestmapman 06-04-2008, 09:28 PM The CEO has made her decision. We are going to upgrade our Jetta TDI Sedan to the TDI Sportwagon this fall. WriConsult 06-05-2008, 04:12 PM Uh-oh. The "Price List" page no longer shows the TDI. Prepare for an adjustment. Too bad. $23k is less than 2 year old TDI wagons go for around here. Equipment list looks good, except how can a European car not even offer butt heaters as an option?! Vooch 06-05-2008, 08:24 PM Wri - thanks for checking - Indeed it is gone - too bad I didn't make a screen shot- perhaps they pulled it because no one would buy the gassers if they knew the price of a TDI xcel 06-05-2008, 11:29 PM Hi Vooch: ___I can bet it was a trial balloon and there were many marketing types scanning the enthusiast forums via google and manually just to see what the response would be. Where is my tin foil hat again  ___Good Luck ___Wayne Vooch 06-06-2008, 10:12 PM Wayne, I wish Corporations were as wise as that - no VW just messed up. Who would buy a Jetta SEL gasser at $27K today if they knew they could get a TDI in a few months for $23K ? greenhumanjames 01-05-2009, 08:58 PM not a bad deal at all. phoebeisis 01-06-2009, 10:42 AM Sorry about this Huge aside, but I have a question for you VW types out there, and this posting will attract all of you. I've been casually looking for a replacement for my SUV.There is a 1999 5 speed (I'm assuming they mean the MT) Passat wagon locally for ~$4500. 80,000 miles picture looks OK, no mention of which motor.I doubt it is the AWD version. I've heard that the QC of VW was very, very poor in that era, and the sorta' low asking price makes me wonder. Just how bad are/were VWs from that era? It is a gasoline motor of course, since no TDI mention and low price. Oh, under $24000 for a TDI wagon-too good to be true. Even if it was true,I'm sure you could count on the dealer to "adjust" the price to squeeze all the "goodness" out of it. Of course the economy is terrible, and fuel is waaaaay down in price,so maybe.... Thanks, Charlie WriConsult 01-06-2009, 03:42 PM Charlie, I've heard also heard that the QC of late 90s Passats was pretty horrific. We considered a '97 Passat TDI a couple of years ago when we started looking, and had a mechanic advise us to avoid them at all costs. His concerns were more directed towards the TDI motor, but I believe I've heard from other sources that late 90s gas Passats were awful too. And by awful, I mean worse than post-2000 VWs. Eeee-yikes. Of course if you're considering gas VWs, I've seen 2009 gas SportWagens on ad in the newspaper for $16,650. Won't get the mileage of the TDI of course, but it's a ton of car for the money. phoebeisis 01-06-2009, 05:05 PM Wriconsult, Thanks for the quick info. Guess I'd better pass on it. The Suburban is a guzzler, but it is a reliable guzzler and parts are cheap and easily available. I would love to find a better big dog/4-5 cats/ 3 people evac vehicle, but my current "cash flow" (all the wrong way) is so bad that it would be tough to pay more than $5000. That rules out all Odysseys, all TDI VWswagons, most of the later VW wagons-from 2003 on when I've heard they are better. It rules in older high mile GM SUVs, Fords, Dodge minivans(transmissions??), Taurus stationwagons, very old Accord SW and a few others. The SWs and the minivans are the only ones I really look at since the SUVs wouldn't improve my MPG or total cost of operating etc. Occasionally I see an older BMW or MB SW-12+ years 180,000+ miles for under $5000, but I suspect they are very expensive to repair. Thanks, Charlie Vooch 01-06-2009, 09:02 PM a real steal WriConsult 01-06-2009, 09:44 PM You may also get able to get a Volvo 850 or possibly even V70 wagon in your price range. Great family haulers, decent mpg for the size (~22 EPA city) and certainly less problematic than a late 90s Passat. Not as nice and not quite as good on gas, but Taurus wagons are half decent and can transport 7 if they have the optional 3rd row seat. Also, older Focus wagons are now in the $5000 range. Definitely nicer than the Taurus. I've heard the first year (2001) was troublesome, but that they were pretty good from 2002 on. Not easy to find one with an MT, but they do exist. Also be aware that the 2-valve 2.0 engine listed on the EPA website does NOT exist in Focus wagons. Although Ford had the EPA test the wagon with the 2-valve, all Focus wagons actually built had the 4-valve Zetec engine. Even with that engine you're talking about better mileage than a Subaru or Volvo and very nearly as much interior space (more than it appears from the outside). Focus wagon was my 2nd choice after the Jetta Wagon, which also isn't too far out of your price range. I paid $6300 for mine with low miles (75k) by buying from a warm climate (Phoenix) where people don't care for wagons. vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
