View Full Version : School is out, time to get better fuel economy!

Recently, I have been getting between about 25 and 28 miles per gallon.

I had 5 trips to school a week and got about 22 miles per gallon each trip (driving to get more than that on the road I have to go on would be too dangerous). I also had about 4-5 trips to work a week, getting about 30-34 miles per gallon each trip. Throw in the occasional other trips, and I would get around 28 or so.

Now that school is out of the way, I am ready to hit 30 miles per gallon and up with mainly only work trips!

Now that I am on my summer job (which is also teaching, though fun teaching), I get worse FE. The job is fewer miles away but no highway miles and also no country roads (not that I do much of that anyway).

I agree, my Summer FE is noticably higher than any other time of the year. I encounter several school bus stops on my commute and its nice to drive strait through without having to stop.

Traffic this morning was lighter, and one school zone was turned off. Another was still going, but there's a stop halfway through it anyway, so I'm not even going the 35 limit posted. :p One of my alternate routes is actually an option now, instead of a half-mile of beep/creep minivans.

Hopefully I won't have to deal with any traffic this summer.

The thing that made me get so bad fuel economy on my school trips is having to drive down a highway with a top speed of 55, a lot of traffic, everyone tailgating each other, and you get stopped at just about every light, so that is speeding up to 50ish and then back to 0 about 3 times.

For me, it's avoiding the driving commute all together, because there is no more:

- Dropping off at the middle school on the way to work.
- Picking up after school from soccer, track, cross country, yoga, group homework projects, etc.
- Going to school during the day for programs, chaperoning, lunch, etc.

Those are all important activities, but I'm glad to be back on the bike+bus and dividing my fuel consumption with the other 30 people on the bus each day. :D

I'll probably have to drive in a few times this summer, I just hope I don't lose the few skills that I've gained here during my inactivity.

Hi RDPrice:
I'll probably have to drive in a few times this summer, I just hope I don't lose the few skills that I've gained here during my inactivity.
___Every time I get behind the wheel of a Prius, Insight, FEH, HCH-I or –II, I have the same worry that this drive is going to be completely different than the previous drives from months and even years ago … and each time, within a few minutes, the old leather glove fits like its been attached to my hand for years :D Don’t worry, it is really like riding a bike and it will all come back to you within minutes :)

___Good Luck

Don’t worry, it is really like riding a bike and it will all come back to you within minutes :)

Thanks for the encouragement! If it is like riding a bike, then I should be okay.
