View Full Version : Tire Pressure

When I first got my FEH, I felt that 35psi may be to low. After changing to TP to 40psi, there was a slight gain in MPG and I felt better. Hearing on these forums that people were putting their TP at well above the sidewall max and getting much better MPG, I tried 44 psi and found a big difference in higher EV speeds and MPG.

After just adding a new Eco Plus tire and rim, I had them do a balance and rotate the others. Told the manager to make sure the TP was 44psi. All of a sudden I noticed an increase in MPG, so I didn’t check the tire pressure right away thinking they must be ok. Well this morning I discovered that the TP was 50psi according to my gauge. I do not recommend TP over the max sidewall pressure on a tire for liability reasons, but it is clear, those running above the sidewall max, will get better FE.

Hi Gary:

___The real question is, are you going to give up the slight FE advantage and lower them back down to 44 ;)

___In the real world, the higher you press up, the lower the increase in FE will be.

Dan Kroushl’s Prius II - GY Integrity's

62/62 PSI. 98.8 mpg at 77F
44/42 PSI. 97.4 mpg at 82F
35/33 PSI. 96.0 mpg at 86F

___After 44, you can expect maybe another 1.0 - 1.5 mpg up until you are into the far reaches of Stupid land … I have visited Stupid land more then once (whether by accident or on purpose) and it was a place I would not recommend any but the brave few visit even for a short period if ever :D

___Good Luck

Uh....Wayne, how close is 55-60 in a 35 rated tire?:p I did this last summer. I'm currently running 60 in my Goodyear Assurance Comfortread's that are rated at 44 psi. How much higher would I need to be until I reached the suburbs of Stupid Land?

Hi Larry:

___Oh, about another 100% would camp you smack dab in the middle of town … At that point, you may as well just pull the tires off the rims because the ride will be the same with or without them :D

Hey Wayne

It seems like a waste of air to just let it out of my tires. I'm going to play with it for awhile because the hot weather has dropped me down a few pegs. Can't wait till it cools down here and I go for that 80mpg segment. It may take 55psi to do it, would that be considered fair play with the group here? It just feels like I'm breaking the rules or cheating. You know, I just thought about where that feeling may have came from, posting on FEH Yahoo forum!

Hi Gary:

___50 #’s is the minimum I would like to see run for this group if I had my say … You are fine at 50 - 55 #’s but cheating? Not a chance! The Michelin’s are a little high at 64 #’s right now in fact but it works ;)

Hmm, 120 eh? Sounds like it would give a ride comparable to riding on one of my grandpa's empty hay wagons down the lane. :p I'm not real sure I want to visit that town. :D
