View Full Version : Very, very funny!
billy 06-16-2006, 11:51 AM Hi friends: a hobby of mine is watching sportscar racing. I often attend the 12 hrs of Sebring and other races. This weekend is the 24 hrs of Lemans over in France. Therefore, the forum at www.americanlemans.com is abuzz with activity. I sometimes post there, and yesterday was a classic!!!
My "signature" mentions my Honda Insight, 86 mpg. After I posted a reply to another topic, some wiseguy noticed my signature, and started doubting me about the mpg claim. So in response I briefly described how it works, and happened to mention P&G re a Toyota Prius.
Later I see this reply from some dude in England named "British Racing Green". "Pulse & glide is how my grandpa drove and I always threw up in the back seat. What about jamming the pedal to the floor, until you HAVE to slow down; what kind of mileage does that give those GAYBRIDS? "
Obviously, this car-racing crowd is the wrong forum to be extolling the efficiency of my Insight!
I race open wheel and sports cars, well I did, I have pretty much given it up. Discussing oil depletion and conservation issues with the race car driver community is an exercise in frustration, I have found. There are a few people that understand, but not many.
Hi Bill:
___Although probably far OT with regards to the racing crowd, if they doubt the results, I think a few screenshots or links might be in order? Let me know if you want the links setup as it should only take a few minutes and would include the Insight’s 109.0 mpg over 1523.9 miles using DWL, the Prius II’s 110.0 mpg’s over 1397 miles (99.9 mpg per the FCD due to that limitation) P&G achievement, the FEH’s 70.3 mpg segment under LGA and FS, the TCH’s 64.7 mpg segment under mostly EV with forced charging during ICE-On, or the HiHy’s 47.x mpg P&G segment plus and any number of the non-hybrid segments using all the tools in the tool box :D
___Good Luck

GaryG 06-16-2006, 02:55 PM Hello Billy
What is funny is the way many here that push their vehicle's to extreme FE, can also go to the other extreme and rip many drivers on a track with their own set of wheels. It's not easy being the winner of a race, but we are the winners at the gas pump for sure.
Give us 5-6 gallons each at the start of the Daytona 500, and see who wins and who doesn't even finish! We don't even need a pit stop. I guess we wouldn't draw a crowd or TV camera's to watch either. Bad idea, I'd hate to see one of us take it in the rear while ridge riding anyway.
Maybe we need show them up with The FE Daytona 50 or something and offer free beer to the crowd. We might even get the Dixie Chicks to sing "Not Ready To Make Nice" to the Commander N Chief so we could get the fans really excited. Oh, that's right, they don't sing in the South anymore.

lakedude 06-16-2006, 03:33 PM Why not video one of your segments? When people didn't believe that I was getting over 70 in my HCH I took pictures and taped a segment. Pics are easy to "Photoshop" but editing a video would take a bit of work.
Even if you do get them to believe do you think you can you get them to care?

That's where I run into problems. I can convince them with the facts but then I hear a response like, "Oh well. I could never do that." This thread reminds me of a thread on another forum I'm on. One guy said he had just managed to pull off a 42+ tank in his '70 Duster(not quite stock:D ), when he mentioned it to the cashier at the station she said, "42. Is that good?" *the urge to pull your hair out*
AZBrandon 06-16-2006, 07:33 PM While I did sell my S2000 last year and haven't been on a racetrack in almost 12 months now, I do very much consider myself a racing enthusiast, and probably with more seat time on actual race courses than 90% of all internet armchair quarterbacks who claim to be car enthusiasts. I love power and speed as much as the next guy, but more than anything I love achievements of the automobile. I can appreciate an awesome off-roading expedition, like when I did the 110-mile Moab White Rim Trail in a Jeep Wrangler this past March. I love fast cars, light cars, cars that handle well, cars that can carry a crapload of stuff inside of them or tow a 48' triple axle trailer. I even love high fuel efficiency from all sorts of vehicles. To me, any feat of man or engineer with the automobile is interesting and worthy, so don't pigeon-hole all enthusiasts as being single-mindedly horsepower crazy. There's a few of us that enjoy all sorts of automotive achievements.
Hi Brandon:
___I know Billy, Gary G. and myself are all enthusiasts of the racing scene in some respect. I am not to the point of Bill and have not experienced what Gary has (he used to be a rather infamous Friday nighter on the streets of his home town ;)) but I do enjoy watching a good NASCAR or IRL race on the tube every few months …
___If you have watched the news I post here at CleanMPG, I like to report on racing news that pertains to Cleaner emissions, higher FE, and or renewable fuels no matter the racing circuit! The Audi R10 is my favorite car right now due to its TDI ICE, the IRL is heading to a methanol/ethanol mix, NASCAR is headed to non-leaded and possibly ethanol laced fuels, and the F1 circuit is seriously considering hybrid tech for energy recovery through regen for a little accel boost and even higher FE as well. I do not complain about the racing scene but will scream mightily when the average racing enthusiast will not drive with their brain to lower emissions or increase FE all the while chastising those that do.
___Following along with what Gary was talking about above, there are 3 or 4 Insight’er who Autocross their machines all summer up in Canada IIRC and have lmpg’s in the high 40’s! I also remember an Insighter who used to take his machine to the strip every few weeks and the announcers became absolutely giddy in telling everyone over the PA system that so and so just received 20 - 25 mpg during that blast to the ¼ mile marker! Not the most efficient use of a gallon of gasoline but it sure beats the pants off the blown 69 Plymouth Cuda sucking down almost a gallon doing the same.

philmcneal 06-17-2006, 01:29 AM or that insighter that dropped a k20a (er the same engine found in the civic SI and RSX acura) and scored 10 seconds on the quarter mile. Not sure what was his mileage but I'm sure the low CO drag really contributed to the amazing time not to mention the low weight as well.
I doubt the IMA system was installed though...
Hi All:
___Funny that we were discussing racing enthusiasts today … I just finished watching the “The World’s Fastest Indian” and what a rush near the end. A little slow in the beginning but a great human interest story and one I hope some of you get a chance to watch. It was worth the price of the rental if you are into real stories about Bonneville, the men and woman who race there, and of course speed!
