“If we are going to solve our energy problems we’ve got to think long term. It’s time for us to be serious about investing in alternative energy. It’s time for us to get serious about raising fuel efficiency standards on cars. It’s time that the entire country learn from what’s happening right here in Portland with mass transit and bicycle lanes and funding alternative means of transportation."
"That’s the kind of solution that we need for America."

I'm not an Obama fan (not really a McCain fan either), but I agree with some of the things he says. This is one of them. I just wish I lived close enough to work to bike it, and that there was a safe path to travel. I already have the perfect bike for commuting.

I agree with everything you quoted form Obama.
Problem is I have heard it all before from may different politicians. Long term for a politician is the next election cycle.
Sorry I have just lived long enough to believe if you wait on politicians to solve a problem you wasting your time to put it mildly.

Which is why no matter who ends up in power, we as a citizenry have an obligation to ensure that long-term goals are mandated, supported. We, and hopefully those in the media will help, have to make true long term improvement a key to getting re-elected.
Government is a body of citizens, and ultimately are responsible to citizens. Let's start exercising some of that power.

Unfortunately everytime I got a new job it's more than 17 miles = 1 hr of straight biking. I never worked close enough to bike to work, unless it was an 1:15 bike ride.
