Hi just joined up. I have a new 2008 Jeep Patriot, I bought this instead of the ford escape hybrid because the feul economy difference wasnt enough to offset the cost of the vehicle. I have signifigant snow here and need 4x4 capability for the drive around my town and around work. The majority of my commute is however on the freeway 25mi. one way. The jeep right now is getting 25 mpg average, According to the onboard computer. I am going to remove the luggage rack this weekend. I currently have been using the cruise control while commuting I am going to reduce my speed and see what other things I can do to get more MPG. Wish me luck.

First, Welcom to CMPG!
Just by paying attention to your gas mileage, you will improve, so you are definitely on the right track.

I can't remember, is the Patriot a diesel?

Hi and welcome to the forum. You may want to start with this article (http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510) if you haven't already read through it.

Also, make sure your tires are aired up to the maximum pressure indicated on the tire’s sidewall.

The Patriot uses regular gas.

Welcome, my brother has a Patriot. 30 mpg should be a good goal.

If I recall there are 3 flavors.
2.4L Automatic transmission.
2.4L Standard transmission.
2.0L CVT transmission.

The 2.4L stick is leaner than the CVT, and the CVT is leaner than the 2.4L auto.

Welcome !

A friend has a Caliber (2.0 w/ CVT) - 99% same car as Patriot - except for 4WD.

She gets 37 MPG HWY - by simply driving with a soft foot........

1) never going above 60 MPH (sweet spot for drivetrain-cvt is circa 57 MPH - I forget the exact RPM on the torque curve)

2) pumps tire up to max sidewall

3) hardly any DWL

4) no P&G.

If she did P&G and DWL - she easily break 40 MPG HWY - try DWL & P&G, also look closely at your engine's torque curve (in the glossy brochure) and try and stay in a high torque region. The CVT requires a little different management than a typical auto tranny - ask others on the board about the CVT

Thanks. I pumped the tires up to Max and have been working on the techniques. Last tank came out to 25.9. Right now the Economy gague built into the Patriot says I am up to 27.3. I am trying all of the techniques I can. So far I am doing pretty well IMHO.

How do you add your Feul Economy to your signature. I got 112% and am pretty proud. Want to show it.

OK so that worked. My commute is mostly freeway but this last weekend I did a huge amount of City Driving. The Jeep performs pretty well around town never reaching over 2K rpm between 0-35mph. I have been watching the tach and letting the jeep shift, which it does around 1600 rpm consistantly. The key is not to stomp on it from a dead stop otherwise it wants to climb up to 3K or so. Smooth driving is the key and the vehicle is soooooo much more comfortable a ride when driven conservatively. My wife is very happy with my new driving techniques and says I am a much better driver now. I have always been a very good driver but I think I am even safer by slowing down and paying attention to the vehicle more. I am hoping that this type of care will make my jeep last longer and keep in better condition. My last vehicle a 2001 Chevy s10 Blazer was a peice of junk that was falling apart but how much was my driving and how much was poor workmanship. (I hate Chevy, had 2 in my life and neither was worth a damn.)

Just added my second tank and I got 28.011 MPG. So much better than I thought I could get. Anybody know how weather conditions effect MPG. It has been raining and my average seems to be going down.

Rain hurts your mileage a bunch! Well... it's the water on the road that mainly hurts it.

For me, on average over the last year, wet weather is 12% lower than dry.

weather effects MPG massively

soon you'll be going in the parking lot after work and telling yourself 'nice day that tailwind should give me a 1/3 of a MPG boots'

How is your Jeep doing now for MPG? I have been considering getting the stripped AWD model with the 5 speed, or maybe getting the offroad package. Is yours a 5 speed or CVT? I'm in the Coast Guard and transferring, depending on where I go it may have a big effect on which vehicle I buy.

Thanks,
Don

Our 07 Patriot fits our needs quite well:

Disc all the way around
Esp traction control
world hi tech engine VVT
lifetime power train warranty
5 star & USA made
28-32 MPG AC gets warm in New Mexico
seems fairly priced
