View Full Version : Hypermiling—That 70s Thing
atlaw4u 05-21-2008, 01:46 PM Hyper-miling grows in popularity as fuel prices rise. (http://www.examiner.com/x-210-Baltimore-Traffic-Examiner~y2008m5d20-HypermilingThat-70s-Thing)

If you haven’t noticed, gas prices are skyrocketing. And because of that, reports on a new “old” way of driving have been popping up on local and national newscasts over the last few days. It’s called Hypermiling, and basically, it’s nothing more than a conservative approach to driving, but its okay for Democrats to do it too. I decided to try this new technique on the way in to work to gauge the practicality of its application on real highways. It does save gas, but if you're the only one doing it, you could get yourself killed. At the very least, you'll seriously annoy other drivers.
Check out the video, and then read on to see how I fared....http://www.examiner.com/x-210-Baltimore-Traffic-Examiner~y2008m5d20-HypermilingThat-70s-Thing
jsmithy 05-21-2008, 01:58 PM Read the comments at the end of the article, especially Robert's. His are quite telling of the attitudes of many. They are hidden, so just click 'read' next to the comments verbiage.
HemiSync 05-21-2008, 02:11 PM You don't have to be a member or subscribe to leave a comment so lets go for it.
lightfoot 05-21-2008, 02:17 PM Another typically superficial news report. I left a comment and tried to be positive and not react to the other comments too much. The clip was far better than the article.
JimboK 05-21-2008, 02:40 PM Hey, that guy in the YouTube video he linked looks vaguely familiar! ;)

Someone you see in the mirror in the morning perhaps?
Hopefully you're not the jimbo that left comment #4?

msantos 05-21-2008, 03:18 PM Ahhh... the "Hammer the Gopher" continues with no ending in sight.
For each that we hammer back into the hole, another one pops up right after... ;)

Absolutely not!

I never really thought about it before but I used to really like that game! lol

Well it certainly beats working!
IPlayTrumpets 05-21-2008, 08:32 PM Well - I've put in my 2 cents worth...............I'm sure some of the "gophers" will be quite put out by my comments........
That Robert sounds like a few visitors we've had lately. "I get better MPG at 80 than I do at 55." "I drive safely at 80." "You slow pokes should stay in the right lane or else ride a bus." "The biggest problem in the universe is idiots going "slow" in the "fast" lane." Etc.
I'm having a little bit of fun with him. He's almost at a high, high temperature meltdown.
IPlayTrumpets 05-21-2008, 08:49 PM Yeah - he's not thinking very clearly, is he?
Ophbalance 05-21-2008, 08:54 PM Ah, what the #@$... I put in my 2 cents as well.
Slowly but surely, people are getting better information about hypermiling. Perhaps we should keep track of the major complaints non-hypermilers come up with, and be able to respond in a way that makes them think, or post them on CleanMPG for visitors to read first (okay, maybe second).
Wayne's latest coup (the television report from Chi Town to the Big Apple on only 8.9 gallons was done so well, so gently). He didn't slam the "reporter" and he maintained a jovial attitude. He was perfect. That attitude should defuse a lot of the misplaced anger some non-hypermilers have. Hey, he was human, two arms, two legs, a head with only two eyes - AND HE GETS 71 MPG!!!! Sounds good to me.
Good cop, bad cop. Good tactic Delta Flyer. I hope Robert will take the time to really read what people have said. If he really has kids at home, they need their father. He should keep that in mind as he places himself at risk (and anyone unlucky enought to be in his vicinity when he wipes out).
As I posted on the Examiner, I have friends in wheelchairs and brain damaged and had friends who are now in cemeteries. They left beautiful wives and beautiful children, to carry on without Dad. All because of the mistakes made by others on the highway. When you are going slower, you have more time to react. And if you do get involved in an accident, the forces are lower, which increases the likelihood that you will walk away.
Ophbalance, your post on the Examiner was sooooo good. An object lesson to which we can all relate. You laid it out clearly, and (unlike me) in a non-judgemental way. I look up to you.
Ophbalance 05-21-2008, 11:02 PM Thanks. Though, these kind of internet pissing contests brings to mind one of the funniest comments I've come across... and please, the following is a joke, not a slight on anyone race, religion, etc, etc.... it's a joke ;).
"Arguing on the internet is a lot like being in the special Olympics. No matter who wins, at the end of the day your still retarded".
Bernie just posted Hypermiling - That 70s Thing, Part II. He brings up a good point about my use of names in my responses. I'll have to work on that. I know there are some you must whack over the head (speak to my mother about that one) but most people probably respond to honey more than vinegar. I'm pouting in the corner now, but the correction will make me better at this debate stuff.
P.S. Bernie's web site on the Baltimore Examiner has other articles that are also quite good. Check him out.
Ophbalance 05-22-2008, 06:08 AM And here I didn't even get an honorable mention ;).
laurieaw 05-22-2008, 07:23 AM what i noticed in the responses, and it's a subtle thing, is the tide seems to be changing a little in our direction. i feel like, at least in this case, the speeder is the one being chastised, and a lot more people are feeling it. he is on the defensive, a spot we usually get for ours.......is that a hopeful sign? perhaps.
msantos 05-22-2008, 08:22 AM Laurie, that's a good point... still I also attribute it to good "team work" ;)
Cheers;
MSantos
laurieaw 05-22-2008, 08:24 AM hey, he mentioned my link to wayne's recent drive to new york, he actually went and looked at it. my respect level for the guy went up on that one, and also the fact that he actually looked back and responded to what started yesterday.
i left another note. and also gave delta flyer credit for his recent numbers.
