View Full Version : Something clicked for me today about AC cycling

I'm still on m first hypermiled tank, so I've got a lot to learn still. For whatever reason, I had assumed AC cycling meant turning the entire system on and off and that's what I've done the few times it's been warm enough to need AC.

It was only around 80° today, but I'd been outside sweating all afternoon and the air conditioning on the ride to my next stop felt really nice. Today it occurred to me to just turn off the AC and to leave the blower on recirculating. The ductwork, the vents and the air in the car stays cold for almost 5 minutes making it still feel like the AC was on! I adopted what was approximately a 5 on/5 off system and was comfortable the whole ride.

I've still got about 1/3 tank left. I'm really anxious to see how much the tips I've learned here help out.

I leave a crack on the window for oxygen, and leave the fan on recirc all the time when it's hot (not a large problem here, though :)

try to only use the a/c when the engine is lightly loaded, ie: going down hill or on the level. also, when coasting to a stop at a light. avoid using it when going up hill or accelerating.

I think i have never turned the fan off in my car .. you should see how bad the filter gets... yuck.. but i keep it allways on :) , i dont know , keep my car fresher i guess,,, and heck yea, on the AC thing.. no need to waste it, specially when getting to your destination, turn it off a few miles before getting there, get the most out of it, and less temp shock when you come out of the car .

ALSO it helps dry out the vents so you dont get the horrible mildew smell from the vents :)

I have a 25.8 mi work drive. If it's hot and humid I use some miles of A/C. Did 9 miles of hwy A/C and got 45.8 mpg - that makes me happy vs running it all the time! I also put ultra high heat rejecting Wincos tint to help me stay cool from the sun!
