I'M SO STOKED!!!!!!!!

Before I learned about hypermiling (this past sunday), my last tank of regular commuting was 26.9 mpg.

This past week I drove 251 miles on 1/2 of my tank. Before now, I've never gone more than 400 miles on a tank! But when I realized I was headed toward a FIVE HUNDRED MILE tank, I couldn't wait to fuel up to see how good my mileage had been. So I went and filled up and it only took 6.484 gallons!

38.71 mpg!!!!!!!!!!!!! and with an average trip of 10 miles of city driving!!!!!
That's a $10.05 savings over what I would've spent topping off if i had gone it on 26.9 mpg!

I can't wait to continue learning and experimenting with different techniques. I'm also wanting to do some aero mods eventually.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Congratulations on your achievement. You are correct to assume that you will be doing even better as you learn more and get experience. I think your car is prime for mid-40s. EPA for a 2003 Protege is 27 combined, and 31 highway, so you can see that you are way above average. Please keep us posted on your progress. What have you done so far, to your car, and to your driving style?

Wow those are great numbers!! I must say I'm a little jealous since I have a mazda 3 which is the sequel to the protege and I must say it takes some work to get high 30s low 40s out of my car :woot:

Thanks guys. As far as driving style, my commute is pretty conducive to FAS glides, with plenty of hills. I've also been keeping an eagle eye on my idle time, trying to turn the ICE off only when i come to a yellow/red light stop in order to reduce starter wear, pushing the car out of the driveway, and only starting the car up in the parking lots when all is clear and i can immediately start moving.

I don't know if other sites are consider rivals, but i have posted an economical modification (temporary cardboard aero-hubs) on another dot com...

I will definitely be checking back in! Thanks.
