Well even with some traffic problems and running a bit late for work, I was able to achieve my goal: A 100+ mpg commute to work.

In fact, as the title of this post alludes states, I actually made a 101.5 mpg for the 30 mile drive!!!

I left about 10 minutes late for work and originally thought I was just going to have to go with the flow and speed a bit on the way to work. but then, like a beacon in the night I saw a slow moving truck in the right hand lane calling my name.

I thought to myself WWWD? (What Would Wayne Do?)

I could be a little late, right? I mean it's not like I work at a nuclear plant or something. :)

So I dropped in behind the truck and slowed down. It was loaded with some securely-fastened non-rockthrowing equipment. As we lumbered along a good portion of my route together I knew that this would be an excellent run. The perfect slowness with which he plodded up my route's 1.5 mile hill was a thing of beauty. And the FAS glide on the other side was just as sweet. that trucker made my day!

As I neared the place where I start driving on city surface streets I hit the lights just right, and even when I had to pull off my usual route and go take a drive through many 4-way stops, I kept the mpgs up.

The gods smiled upon me today. Thank you! I can now die happy knowing that my 100+ mpg segment has been reached.

Hi Eric:

___Nice job and congratulations! And you bet I would have been riding the guys underride except for the time constraint ;) Do you think you can keep it up on future drives or was this a one-off, luck of the draw, all the stars and planets aligned type commute? I hope your car pooler was in the car to see how it was accomplished so maybe she will purchase a hybrid herself?

___The Insight was never a great close in drafter in and around the Chicago area because the OTR’ers were traveling so darned fast what seems like so long ago. Nowadays, everyone is slowing down and I would love to experience what you did. Oh wait, I did experience that on the way back from the Tour DelSol!

Congratulations!

With 85% freeway over 24 miles, I should have a chance, but 101.5mpg is still like climbing Mt Everest.

Congradulations on your new personal best. I may be counting my chickens before they hatch, but I think I have a good chance to break the 100 MPG barrier on this tank. I have a 2000 Insight and at 936 miles I'm showing 101.2. I'm working on an over full tank of 12+ gallons so I have about 300 miles to go, plenty of time for reallity to set in. A 100 MPG tank has been a goal of mine for 38 years. I have made short segments of 100+ but not a whole tank yet. The closest I came is 97.9 and that was last tank. Man I hope I make it this time. I have done most of the hypermiler tricks for many years but the biggest change I have made lately is to leave for work way early. I have found a guiet time were the traffic is light enough to allow hypermiling without disrupting the normal flow of traffic, and with $3 gas I find a lot more tolerance of hypermiling. Keep up the good work and I hope too much reallity doesn't set in to mess up your 100 MPG. Wish me good luck....Louis

100 mpg tank? Go for it!
I've only goten over 80 mpg on a tank onece, so 100mpg tank seems unattainable for me. But who knows?

Hi Louis:

___You have the technology and you have the skills, now let us all hope for a little help from Mother Nature for you over the next 3 or 4 days. Nice job on what you have achieved over the first 900 miles! There are very few individuals on the planet that have experienced what you have and I have a feeling this will not be the last time you will experience it either ;)

___Good Luck

Thanks for the encouragement. With me leaving for work very early has provided some help from mother nature in the form of a tail wind in both directions and also the traffic is bogged down just enough that I can go 45 to 50 with out a lot of slowing down and speeding up. What do you call that DWB? DWL? When my original battery was going bad I was doing mostly mid 80s with an occasional low 90s. Last summer with the new batteries I averaged in the mid 90s, but was not able to hold 100+ past 200 miles. My new morning departure time has been a big help but twice on this tank mother nature knocked me out of the 100s with big dust storms. Did you see the dust storm on the news at Phoenix? I got cought in it, both in the air and on the ground. I'm a corporate pilot and was about 6 minutes from landing when the storm hit Sky Harbor and they shut it down and we had to hold for 50 minutes. The wind was 60 knots from the southwest which would have helped with part on the drive home but hurt the other part. By the time we landed and I started driving home the wind had shifted to the south which ment it hurt me on the first part and no effect on the second part. The end result was a loss of .4, but I got it back pluss some. The weather looks good for next week so I think I'll make 100+ on this tank.....Louis
